Box Score POUGHKEPSIE, NEW YORK – The Marist baseball team (16-24-1, 10-11 MAAC) defeated Fairfield (15-30, 8-13) in heroic fashion on Sunday afternoon. The Red Foxes won 1-0 in the 10th inning of the game off a walk-off homerun.
Senior first basemen Steve Laurino (Carle Place, New York) had the only RBI for the Red Foxes going 2-for-5 with one run scored. Junior center fielder Graham McIntire (Concord, New Hampshire) went 2-for-4, while junior shortstop John Brucker (Sparta, New Jersey) was 2-for-4.
It was a game that saw great pitching and defensive plays for both teams. Senior right-hander Evan Davis (Little Falls, New York) pitched a 10 inning shutout in his final start at McCann Field. Davis (4-7) gave up only five hits in 10 innings and struck out six batters.
The Red Foxes had a couple great defensive plays to prevent the Stags from crossing home plate. In the top of the third, The Red Foxes turned a double play with a Fairfield runner on third to end the inning. In the sixth with the bases loaded for Fairfield and one out junior second basemen Joey Aiola (Suffern, New York) caught a line drive, and tossed it to Brucker covering second to turn the double play and get the Red Foxes out of the inning.
In a scoreless game in the bottom of the tenth with two outs and a 3-2 pitch count Laurino got ahold of a pitch and sent it over the left field wall in his final swing at McCann Field to win the Red Foxes the game 1-0.
The Red Foxes are in control of their own destiny heading into the final weekend of Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference play. Marist returns to action on Saturday, May 16 for a doubleheader at Saint Peter's. The first pitch is scheduled for noon.
