Box Score JERSEY CITY, New Jersey – The Marist baseball team suffered an 8-4 loss at Saint Peter's in a Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference game on Sunday to close out the regular season.
The Red Foxes outhit the Peacocks, 15-12. Junior designated hitter Matt Pagano led the Red Foxes by going 3-for-5 with an RBI. Red-shirt sophomore right fielder Zachary Racusin, senior catcher Mark Swertfager and junior shortstop John Brucker added two hits apiece.
An RBI single by Pagano brought home junior center fielder Graham McIntire with the game's first run in the first. Saint Peter's took the lead for good with a four-run third. A sacrifice fly by McIntire drove in junior third baseman Matt Belitz to cut Marist's deficit to 4-2 in the fourth, but the Peacocks answered with single runs in the fourth, sixth and seventh.
In the eighth, Marist cut its deficit to 7-4 on an RBI double by senior third baseman Alec Petrone, which brought home freshman catcher Matt Iantosca, and an RBI single by Racusin, which scored Petrone. However, Saint Peter's scored the game's final run in the bottom half of the inning.
First baseman Chris Hugg led Saint Peter's offensively by going 3-for-4 with two RBIs. Center fielder Rob Moore had three RBIs, including a two-run double in the Peacocks' four-run third.
Mark Wilson (1-3) went the first 7.2 innings to earn the win for Saint Peter's. Paul Schiffillitti go the game's final out for his first save. Freshman right-hander Spencer Bunting (0-4) took the loss for Marist. Bunting was the second of six pitchers the Red Foxes used; none went more than two innings or threw more than 31 pitches.
Marist is 18-25-1 overall, and finished MAAC play at 12-12. Saint Peter's concludes its season at 10-37-1 overall and 7-17 in the MAAC.
Marist open play in the 2015 MAAC Baseball Championships, which will be held at Dutchess Stadium in Fishkill, New York, on Wednesday. The sixth-seeded Red Foxes' first game in the double elimination tournament will be against third-seeded Quinnipiac at noon.
