WEST POINT, New York - The Marist volleyball team came back from dropping the opening set to take down Hudson Valley rival Army West Point, 3-1, in a road match Sept. 9. The Red Foxes were down 1-0 after losing the first set 25-16, but charged back with wins of 25-19, 25-20, and 25-16 for their third victory of 2015.
Marist had a different leader in each statistical category, owned an 8-5 edge in blocks as a team and forced 24 attack errors in the match. Sophomore Kelsey Ediger slammed 17 kills and junior Lexi Millington had 22 digs in the defensive effort.
An explosive 10-3 run in the second set with Ediger and Millington serving gave the Red Foxes an 18-14 cushion and eventually helped evened the match.
The third time was the charm for Marist, as the Red Foxes tied the third set three times, including once on a service ace from Amanda Schlegel. A 10-4 run put away the Black Knights and gave the Red Foxes the 2-1 lead.
In the final set, the Black Knights led in the early going. A Kelsey Lahey kill began a stretch of six straight points for Marist that prevailed through Army West Point's two timeouts. The Marist lead increased to as much as nine in the 25-16 frame.
Army West Point senior setter Vanessa Edwards posted team highs with 34 assists and a pair of service aces. Sophomore Shannel Chong also chipped in 20 digs.
The Red Foxes will host the Volley In The Valley Tournament in McCann Arena on Sept. 11 and 12. Marist will face off against Bryant at 5 p.m. Sept. 11 before hosting La Salle (1:30 p.m.) and Bucknell (7 p.m.) on Sept. 12.
