POUGHKEEPSIE, New York - The Marist volleyball team kicked off the Volley In The Valley Tournament with a five-set win over Bryant on Sept. 11 in McCann Arena. The Red Foxes are 4-4 on the season after a match that ended with set scores of 22-25, 26-24, 25-19, 23-25 and 15-8.
Senior Kelsey Lahey finished with a double-double, slamming 17 kills alongside 14 digs. Junior Amanda Schlegel posted a match-high 54 assists.
Marist dropped the first set after being unable to erase a five-point deficit. The Red Foxes tied the next set six times to even the match, however, and eventually built a three-point lead. The Bulldogs charged back to tie the score at 24, but consecutive kills from sophomore Kelsey Ediger put Bryant away. Ediger would post a team-high 19 kills in the match.
A 6-1 scoring spree from Marist pulled it ahead for good in the third set, but a pair of runs began the fourth set to pull both sides even at 13, then again at 18 points. Bryant would eventually force a fifth set on a Kristin Kingi kill.
The Red Foxes scored all but two of their points on the attack in the decisive frame. They owned a 75-60 edge in kills and jumped for 16 blocks to Bryant's 8.
Senior libero Debora Magalhaes put up 20 digs and a pair of service aces for the Bulldogs.
The Red Foxes will host La Salle on the second and final day of the tournament at 1:30 p.m. Saturday before facing off against Bucknell later that evening at 7 p.m.
