POUGHKEEPSIE, New York - The Marist volleyball team lost to Manhattan in four sets to open Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference play Sept. 19. Two sets were decided by 30 points or more, as the Red Foxes took the first set 25-22 before falling 32-30, 25-20, and 30-28.
Senior Courtney Shaw led all players, slamming a career-high 21 kills in front. At setter, junior Amanda Schlegel posted team highs with two service aces and 42 assists.
A 6-3 Red Foxes run in the opening set increased the Marist lead to as much as seven points.
Both teams battled to the bitter end in the second and fourth sets. Marist tied the score three times at the end of the second frame, which was ultimately decided by a pair of errors. The fourth set featured eight ties, as five different players had at least one kill for the Red Foxes. A Manhattan attack error put Marist in front, 28-27, but the Red Foxes would not get another point.
The Jaspers got three service aces from senior Claire Van Dyk, who also racked up 17 kills.
The Red Foxes will host Iona at 1 p.m. tomorrow for the fifth of a six-match home stand. Marist defeated the Gaels in the quarterfinals of last year's MAAC Championships.
