Box Score 2 EASTON & BETHLEHEM, Pennsylvania - The Marist volleyball team (2-3) began play in the Crosstown Tournament with a win and a loss Friday. The Red Foxes took down Morehead State, 3-1, at Lafayette University before traveling about 20 minutes to Lehigh University and falling to the Mountain Hawks, 3-0.
Marist 3, Morehead State 1 (25-21,17-25,25-18,25-18)
Senior Kelsey Lahey posted a double-double with a team-high 14 kills and 10 digs in a match Marist led for most of the way. A solid overall outing from junior Amanda Schlegel included 29 assists, seven digs and four blocks.
The Eagles peppered in points throughout the opening set, pulling even at 17 before the Red Foxes closed out on a 9-4 run that forced five Morehead State attack errors. Morehead State racked up 17 points on kills in the second set to tie the match at 1.
Marist's defense intensified in the final two sets, as the Red Foxes ended up with a 13-3 advantage in blocks in the match and finished with a .640 sideout percentage.
Freshman Merideth Jewell tallied a match-high 26 kills alongside 10 digs while classmate Alyssa Cecil posted 13 digs for the Eagles.
Lehigh 3, Marist 0 (25-15,25-22,25-17)
Sophomore Kelsey Ediger (15) and senior Courtney Shaw (12) finished with double digit kills in the loss. On the defensive side, junior Lexi Millington racked up 13 digs alongside a service ace to lead the Red Foxes in both categories.
The second set proved to be the most decisive in the match. Marist overcame three four-point deficits and trailed by five points at one time before snatching an 18-17 lead. The Red Foxes could not sustain momentum however, as a 6-1 surge from the Mountain Hawks put Lehigh up for good in the match.
Lehigh senior Amy Matula had 28 of the team's 36 assists while classmate Claire Bradshaw recorded 13 digs. The Mountain Hawks ended the match with a .262 hitting percentage.
A 1 p.m. match against the Lafayette Leopards on Saturday concludes the tournament weekend for Marist.
