EASTON, Pennsylvania - The Marist volleyball team (2-4) jumped out to an early lead but could not put away the Lafayette Leopards, who ended up winning in five sets Sept. 5.

The Red Foxes took the first two frames 25-13 and 25-12, but lost the final three sets 27-25, 25-18 and 15-13 to go 1-2 on the weekend. The match was the final one hosted at Lafayette in the Crosstown Tournament.

Junior Amanda Schlegel led Marist with a double-double, posting 26 assists and 15 digs to go along with four service aces. Along the front line sophomore Ashton Korona jumped for a career-high four blocks and senior Kelsey Lahey slammed 13 kills. Lahey was named to the All-Tournament Team following the match.

The Red Foxes gained a 30-14 edge in kills over the first two sets, trailing only once in that span. At the first tie of the match in the opening frame, Marist ripped off a 12-5 run and then went on an 8-2 tear in the second set.

All 25 points were not good enough for the Red Foxes to win the third set however, as Lafayette notched four of the last six points to begin their comeback. Marist got the deficit to within four in the fourth set but could not close the door.

Lafayette enjoyed strong showings from junior Jet Manzi, who had a match-high 16 kills, and freshman Maria Balus, who racked up 38 assists and tied for the team high with three service aces.

Marist had 12 blocks and hit .278 as a team in the loss.

The Red Foxes will face off against Hudson Valley rival Army West Point in its next match at 5 p.m. Sept. 9. The Red Foxes will then host the Volley In The Valley Tournament on Sept. 11 and 12 as they welcome Bryant, La Salle and Bucknell to McCann Arena.
