LEWISBURG, Pennsylvania - A pair of third-quarter touchdowns lifted Bucknell over Marist, 17-0, in the season opener for both teams on Saturday night at Christy Mathewson-Memorial Stadium.
For Marist, fifth-year senior free safety Zach Adler totaled seven tackles and an interception. Senior defensive end Landon Moore finished with seven tackles, including a sack. Senior cornerback Zachary Quarles broke up three passes, had a fumble recovery and added a tackle. Fifth-year senior linebacker Miguel Sandoval had a team-leading eight tackles.
Fifth-year senior wide receiver Matt Tralli had five receptions for a team-best 59 yards. Junior running back Marcellus Calhoun ran for 33 yards on 12 carries, and tied Tralli for the team-high with five receptions, which went for 25 yards. Senior quarterback Ed Achziger was 16-for-34 through the air for 140 yards. The Red Foxes did not commit a turnover.
Junior Mike Maccarone had an average of 42.1 yards on his eight punts, with a long of 56. Senior John Brennan blocked a fourth-quarter field goal.
Bucknell scored first on a 30-yard field goal by John Burdick with nine seconds left in the first quarter. The Red Foxes put together two drives of nine plays or more in the first half, but both ended in field goals being blocked. However, Marist held Bucknell to 45 yards of total offense in the second quarter, and trailed just 3-0 heading into halftime.
Bucknell received the second-half kickoff, and put together a 10-play, 78-yard drive over 5:23, which culminated in a four-yard touchdown run by quarterback R.J. Nitti. Following a Marist punt, the Bison had a 14-play, 70-yard drive over 7:38 punctuated by a quarterback sneak for a touchdown by Nitti from inside a yard away. Nitti's second touchdown came with 39 seconds left in the third quarter, and closed out the scoring.
C.J. Williams paced Bucknell offensively with 131 yards on 31 carries. Defensively, Bret Berg had seven tackles and three pass break-ups.
Marist will return to action at Georgetown on Saturday, Sept. 12. Kickoff is set for 6 p.m.
Notes: Tralli has had at least four receptions in all 12 Marist games over the last two seasons. … Adler's interception was the 16th of his career, putting him two away from Mario Wilson's all-time program record. … In the third quarter, Bucknell held a 13:11-1:49 edge in time of possession and ran 24 plays from scrimmage, as opposed to seven for Marist. … The Red Foxes had possession for 16:21 in the first half, and 7:31 in the second half. … Bucknell was 11-for-18 on third-down conversions. Marist was 1-for-12.
