POUGHKEEPSIE, New York - The Red Foxes picked up their sixth conference win and third in a row on Sunday afternoon with a 78-55 victory over the Monmouth Hawks at McCann Arena. The win brings Marist to 7-11 (6-2 Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference) while the loss drops the Hawks to 5-11 (3-4 MAAC).
With the win the Marist women's basketball team also reached a milestone 600 victories in division I program history. With 332 of those wins coming under Head Coach Brian Giorgis' watch, in just 13 seasons the Red Foxes have accumulated more than half of their program win total in close to a third of the time the program has been in existence (35th year as varsity).
Tori Jarosz led the Red Foxes with her 13th double-double of the season, scoring 21 points on 7-for-16 shooting while grabbing 10 rebounds. Freshman Maura Fitzpatrick had a career high 15 points on 5-for-11 shooting from the field, 2-for-4 from three point range and 3-for-3 from the free throw line and tied a career high with seven rebounds.
Senior Danica Dragicevic led Monmouth with 12 points on 6-for-9 shooting and 10 rebounds, good for a double-double. The Hawks outrebounded Marist 47-43 including 20-9 on the offensive glass. The Red Foxes had 18 assists on the afternoon to Monmouth's 10.
Marist jumped on Monmouth early using a 15-0 run that spanned the last four minutes of the first quarter to take a 27-11 lead into the second. The 27 point quarter also bested a season high 26, which the Red Foxes had previously set at Fairfield. Jarosz led the Red Foxes in the first quarter with 13 points and four rebounds as the team shot 9-for-18 from the field and 3-for-5 from deep in the opening stanza.
The Hawks started out the second quarter outscoring Marist 12-4 until a three from Fitzpatrick pushed the Red Foxes lead back to double digits, 34-24, with 5:13 to go in the half. A near three minute scoring drought for Marist allowed Monmouth to cut back into the lead but the Red Foxes finished the quarter strong as Claire Oberdorf drilled a three from the wing to end the half, sending Marist to the locker room with a 41-28 lead.
Both teams traded baskets and runs in the third quarter and Marist was able to keep their double digit lead heading into the fourth. The Red Foxes started the fourth quarter on a 10-0 run that led to the team's largest lead of the game up to that point at 64-45 with 6:41 remaining.
The Red Foxes have a mini break and head into their third game of a five game home stand this upcoming Saturday against Niagara. Tip-off is scheduled for 7 p.m.
