POUGHKEEPSIE, New York - Despite holding a 15-point lead with just over 12 minutes remaining in the second half, the Marist men's basketball team fell to Niagara, 69-66, on Thursday at McCann Arena.
With 2.7 seconds to play, Karonn Davis drained a three-pointer from the left corner to give the Purple Eagles the lead for good.
Red-shirt junior Khallid Hart led the Red Foxes with 17 points on 5-for-10 shooting from the floor, 3-for-5 from behind the arc and 4-for-4 from the free throw line. Freshman Isaiah Lamb chipped in 15 points on 6-for-10 shooting from the field and 3-for-6 from deep.
Sophomore Matt Scott led Niagara with 32 points on 13-for-24 shooting, including 2-for-7 from three point range and 4-for-6 from the charity stripe. He added 13 rebounds, five assists and four steals.
Marist led for 34:39 of the game. The Red Foxes' largest lead of the first was 16, when a jumper by Lamb with 6:43 remaining in the period gave his team a 30-15 advantage. Marist held a 40-29 advantage after the first 20 minutes.
With 12:12 to play, a transition bucket by Hart once again gave Marist a 15-point lead. However, the Red Foxes scored just eight points the remainder of the game. Following Hart's basket, Niagara went on a 10-0 run and held Marist scoreless for the next 5:32. A jumper in the lane by senior center Eric Truog then gave the Red Foxes a 62-54 lead with 5:59 to play. Niagara then answered with a 12-0 run and held Marist without a point over the ensuing 5:01. In all, Niagara outscored Marist 23-4 over a span of 11:14.
With Niagara leading 66-62, a basket by Lamb cut Marist's deficit to two with 57 second remaining. On the following possession, freshman forward Kristinn Palsson took a charge from Scott. Freshman guard Brian Parker then tied the game with 19 seconds to go on a jumper in the lane. But Davis' corner three on the following possession was the game-winner.
Marist shot .490 from the field, .476 from three point range and .429 from the free throw line. The Purple Eagles shot .435 from the field, .200 from behind the arc and .667 from the charity stripe. Niagara outrebounded the Red Foxes 37-28, including 14-5 on the offensive glass. The Purple Eagles' bench outscored Marist's bench 25-14.
Marist now stands at 4-15 (1-9 Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference) while the Purple Eagles improved to 6-16 (4-7 MAAC).
Next up for the Red Foxes is a road game in Albany, New York against Siena on Saturday. Tip-off is scheduled for 7 p.m. The game will be televised on Time Warner Cable SportsChannel (323) in New York State, and will be carried on ESPN3 outside of New York.
Notes: Davis was 0-for-8 from the field before his game-winning three-pointer. … Marist's 15-point lead on two occasions, as well as its 11-point halftime lead, were its largest of the season. … The last four Niagara-Marist games have been decided by a total of 11 points. … Junior center Kentrall Brooks made his first start of the season. Brooks finished with four points, five rebounds and two blocks in 22 minutes. A total of 11 Red Foxes have now started games this season.
