POUGHKEEPSIE, New York - The Red Foxes improved to 3-0 in Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference play, with a 66-54 victory over the Rider University Broncs on Sunday afternoon at McCann Arena. With the win, Marist moves to 4-9 overall (3-0 MAAC) while the loss drops Rider to 3-9 (0-3 MAAC) on the season.
Senior Sydney Coffey led the Red Foxes with 23 points on 5-for-14 shooting from the field, 2-for-4 from three and 11-for-13 from the free throw line to go along with five rebounds and four assists. Sixth year senior Tori Jarosz notched her eighth double-double of the year with 22 points on 8-for-15 shooting from the field and 6-for-8 from the charity stripe along with 14 rebounds and a career high and single game program record seven blocks. Jarosz previously held the record with Diesa Siedel.
Julia Duggan led the Broncs with 15 points on 5-for-16 shooting from the floor and 5-for-6 from the free throw line to go along with six rebounds.
The Red Foxes were slow out of the gates taking over four minutes to score their first basket, starting 0-for-6 from the field. Jarosz broke the ice for Marist but the team never could get it going in the first. The Red Foxes defensive effort kept them in the quarter as Jarosz tallied three blocks in the first quarter alone. At the end of one the Broncs held a 9-8 lead as both teams shot below 30 percent in the quarter.
A three pointer from Claire Oberdorf at 6:27 of the second quarter regained the lead for Marist at 13-11, followed by a steal from Oberdorf that led to a three point play the old fashioned way by Jarosz that increased the lead to five. The Red Foxes closed out the first half scoring on 4-of-their-last-5 attempts from the field and going 4-for-4 from the free throw stripe to take a 27-20 lead into the locker room.
The Broncs battled back in the third quarter cutting the Marist lead down to as little as three. Consecutive layups from Jarosz and Coffey pushed the Marist lead back to seven, 40-33, with 2:59 remaining in the third. A 4-0 Rider run was then answered by a layup from Rebecka Garderyd after a nice find from Coffey.
Coffey then took matters into her own hands, driving the baseline for a tough layup to cap a 4-0 Red Foxes run of their own. Undeterred, Rider's Lexi Posset knocked down a big three from the wing in response to cut the Marist lead back down to four only to be answered again by a three from Coffey to push the Marist lead back to seven. The Red Foxes headed to the fourth quarter holding a 47-40 lead.
The Red Foxes scored the first three points of the fourth quarter as the team took a 10 point lead, their largest of the game, with 8:16 remaining. Coffey and Jarosz led the Red Foxes in the final stanza, Coffey scoring 11 of her 23 points, while Jarosz capped off her eighth double-double of the season and tied the single game block record.
The Red Foxes head to Iona (7-7, 3-0 MAAC) for their next match-up on Thursday, January 7th. Tip-off is scheduled for 5 p.m.
