LAWRENCEVILLE, New Jersey – The Marist women's basketball team took down the Rider Broncs, 74-56, Saturday night in a Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference matchup at Alumni Gym. With the win Marist holds onto first place in the MAAC, improves to 10-2 in conference, and moves back to .500 at 11-11 overall. The Broncs drop to 4-16 overall, 1-11 in conference play.
Sydney Coffey led the Red Foxes in scoring, finishing the game with 19 points on 5-for-9 shooting in only 21 minutes of action. Coffey also went 9-for-10 from the free throw line and added three assists and two steals.
Tori Jarosz secured her NCAA leading 17th double-double of the season putting up 13 points and pulling down 12 rebounds in just 19 minutes of play. Allie Clement was the Red Foxes third player in double digits, scoring 11 points.
Marist jumped out to an 11-4 lead by the time the first media timeout hit in the first quarter. The Red Foxes then used an 8-0 run coming out of the timeout to increase their lead to 18-4. Sydney Coffey, who was aggressive from the jump, paced the Red Foxes with eight points in the first quarter. Jarosz working on her 17th double-double of the season grabbed seven boards in the first. A buzzer beating turn around shot in the post would give Jarosz six points in the first quarter and a 25-8 lead for Marist after one.
The Red Foxes kept the pressure on in the second quarter, scoring the first two baskets of the quarter, jumping out to a 21 point, 29-8 lead with 8:41 to go in the half. The Red Foxes extended their opening quarter run to 12-2 taking a 37-10 advantage with just under five to go in the second. The Red Foxes finished the half with a 49-22 lead and their highest point total of the season.
Sydney Coffey led the way for Marist in the half with 14 points on 4-for-6 shooting. The Red Foxes as a team shot 57 percent from the floor (19-for-33) and went 9-for-9 from the free throw line. Marist pounded the paint outscoring the Broncs inside 32-4. The Red Foxes only blip in a nearly flawless offensive half was that the team went 2-for-12 from three point range.
The Marist defense finished the half forcing 11 Rider turnovers and holding the Broncs offense to 26 percent shooting from the field (9-for-34) and 1-for-10 shooting from downtown.
The Red Foxes kept pace in the third quarter, outscoring Rider 16-11, and leading 65-33 after three. The Red Foxes percentages took a dip in the third quarter as the team shot just 4-for-18 from the field and continued their cold stretch from outside, finishing 0-for-5 in the quarter.
The Red Foxes have just under a week off from action and travel back to New Jersey to take on Saint Peter's on Friday, February 5th. Tip-off is set for 7 p.m.
