POUGHKEEPSIE, New York – The Marist men's basketball team lost a Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference home game to Saint Peter's on Monday, 68-60.
The Red Foxes had four double-digit scorers, all of whom were freshmen. Brian Parker led the Red Foxes in points (14), rebounds (eight) and assists (three). David Knudsen, who hit three three-pointers and was 4-for-4 from the free-throw line, scored a career-high 13 in 19 minutes off the bench. Kristinn Palsson hit four three-pointers, and finished with 12 points, six rebounds and a career-high three steals. Isaiah Lamb scored 10.
“When you go against a team like Saint Peter's, who's so good in the half court, you have to convert in transition and at the free-throw line,” head coach Mike Maker said, “and we didn't do that tonight.”
Saint Peter's was led in scoring by Trevis Wyche, who contributed 16 off the bench. Antwon Portley scored 15, and Quadir Welton hauled in a game-high 10 rebounds.
Saint Peter's outrebounded Marist, 46-32. The Peacocks shot .406 (26-for-64) from the field, as opposed to .373 (19-for-51) for the Red Foxes.
Saint Peter's led for 33:55 of the game. A 9-0 run over a span of 4:35 enabled Saint Peter's to take a 31-19 lead with 4:43 left in the first half. The Peacocks then held the Red Foxes scoreless over the final three minutes of the first half, and led 38-26 after the first 20 minutes.
A three-pointer by Cameron Jones with 17:04 to play gave Saint Peter's its largest lead at 43-30. After Jones' shot, the Red Foxes held the Peacocks scoreless over the next 5:40 and scored nine consecutive points. However, Marist got no closer than four points the rest of the way, and had a deficit of at least seven throughout the final nine minutes.
“I give Saint Peter's a lot of credit,” Parker said. “They out-toughed us tonight, and we'll learn from it.”
Marist is now 4-9 overall and 1-3 in the MAAC. Saint Peter's is 5-7 overall and 3-0 in MAAC play.
Marist will return to action on Saturday, when the Red Foxes travel to Iona. Tip-off is scheduled for 4 p.m.
Notes: Khallid Hart was held to five points, marking the first time this season he did not score in double digits. Hart was presented with a commemorative basketball prior to the game for scoring his 1,000th career point against Canisius on Jan. 2. … Palsson is shooting .500 (17-for-34) from three-point range in his last five games. … Marist hit 10 three-pointers tonight, and has hit at least 10 threes in each of its last three games. … This was Saint Peter's first victory at McCann Arena since the 2010-11 season. The home team had won the past six games in the series. … Saturday's contest at Iona marks the first of three consecutive road games for Marist, a stretch which also includes games at Rider (Jan. 14) and Saint Peter's (Jan. 17). The Red Foxes' next home game will be against Fairfield on Friday, Jan. 22, which will be carried on ESPN3 or ESPNU.
