POUGHKEEPSIE, New York – The Marist football team earned its first victory of the 2016 season on Saturday with a 24-7 triumph over Campbell in its Pioneer Football League opener at Tenney Stadium.

Campbell scored the game's first points on a two-yard touchdown run by DeShawn Jones with 9:47 left in the second quarter. The score capped an 11-play, 93-yard drive. However, the Red Foxes rebounded with the final 24 points of the game, and outscored the Camels 21-0 in the second half.

A 28-yard field goal by senior Mike Maccarone cut the Camels' lead to 7-3 with 22 seconds left in the first half, and the score remained the same as the teams went to the locker room. Marist received the second-half kickoff, and took the lead for good on a three-yard touchdown pass from red-shirt sophomore quarterback Mike White to senior Joe Jordan with 11:26 left in the third quarter.

The Red Foxes forced a three-and-out on Campbell's next drive, and had a 13-play, 56-yard ensuing drive which culminated in a one-yard touchdown run by red-shirt junior Marcellus Calhoun. Calhoun's second touchdown, a two-yard scamper with 2:13 to play, closed out the scoring.

White finished the day 19-for-37 through the air for 233 yards with one touchdown and one interception. He also led the Red Foxes with 39 rushing yards on 11 carries. Calhoun racked up 113 total yards, leading the Red Foxes with 67 receiving yards on three catches and adding 46 yards on the ground. Jordan led Marist with six receptions, which went for 48 yards.

Defensively, red-shirt sophomore safety Jordyn Jean-Felix totaled seven tackled, one tackle for loss, one interception, and two pass break-ups. Red-shirt junior nose tackle Daniel Njoku had a team-best one-and-a-half of the Red Foxes' four sacks. Red-shirt sophomore cornerback Brandon Miller had a team-best 10 tackles. Red-shirt sophomore linebacker Willie Barrett totaled eight tackles and a sack. Senior cornerback Cameron Gibson finished with seven tackles and an interception.

For Campbell, quarterback Elijah Burress completed eight of 26 passes for 130 yards and two interceptions. Burress led the Camels with 142 rushing yards on 22 carries. The Red Foxes held two-time PFL Offensive Player of the Week DeShawn Jones to 63 yards on 18 carries. Carlos Merritt and Scott Miller led the Camels with seven tackles apiece.

Marist is now 1-3 overall and 1-0 in the PFL. Campbell is 3-2 overall and 1-1 in league play.

Marist returns to action on Saturday, Oct. 8 when the Red Foxes face PFL foe Butler in Indianapolis. Kickoff is set for 1 p.m.

Notes: Marist is 7-1 against Campbell all-time, with five straight victories. … Marist has now won its first game following a bye week for fourth straight seasons. … The attendance on Family Weekend was listed at 3,171. This marks the first time since 2011 that Marist has had two crowds of over 3,000 in the same season, as the Red Foxes drew 3,363 for their season opener against Bucknell.
