NEW ROCHELLE, New York - The Marist volleyball team moved to 4-1 in Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference play after defeating Iona, 3-1, on Oct. 1. Set scores were 25-18, 27-25, 23-25 and 25-11.
Junior Kelsey Ediger and sophomore Mackenzie O'Brien each slammed 11 kills while senior Lexi Millington led the contest in digs with 24. Sophomore Taylor van der Biezen put up a double-double with 24 assists and 11 digs alongside a pair of service aces.Â
Five straight Red Fox points in the middle of the opening frame helped give Marist the early lead as it broke away from the Gaels. Iona cut the deficit to four, but kills from freshman Megan Fergus and O'Brien, respectively put the Red Foxes up 1-0. Â Â
The Red Foxes led the entire second stanza, forcing three attack errors to open up a six-point advantage. Iona charged back with a 7-0 scoring spree to cut the lead to 21-20 and eventually deadlock the score at 24. But Marist put away Iona with its 27th point of the set.
van der Biezen had the hot hand extending into the third set with her second service ace as Marist jumped out to a 6-0 edge. The set was tied eight times though, and Iona extended the match with a 7-2 run of its own.
In the final frame, the Marist lead grew to 11 points at 19-8 and the Red Foxes eventually earned their fourth win in their last five matches of their MAAC schedule. Â Â
For Iona, sophomore Claire Archibald swatted a team-high 11 kills and junior Shaina Campbell led the defense by jumping for three blocks.
The Gaels swiped seven service aces, but had just three blocks to the Red Foxes' eight on the afternoon.
Marist continues MAAC play Sunday, October 2, when its takes on Manhattan at 1 p.m. in Riverdale, New York.
