HAMDEN, Connecticut - The Marist volleyball team completed its first go round of Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference play with a 3-2 loss at Quinnipiac on Oct. 15. Set scores were 21-25, 27-25, 26-28, 25-20 and 18-16. Both teams are now 7-2 in conference competition this season. Â
Junior Kelsey Ediger registered a double-double with a match high 24 kills alongside 13 digs. Despite rotating setters in the match, sophomore Taylor van der Biezen ended up with a career-high 50 assists. Freshman Megan Fergus hammered 16 kills and jumped for five blocks.
The match featured 47 ties and 17 lead changes as the ball dropped on opposite sides of the court with each serve right from the opening set. Neither side had a run longer than three straight points, but the Red Foxes opened up a 13-10 lead and eventually went up 17-12 after forcing some attack errors. An Ediger kill got Marist off on the right foot.
Neither team led by more than three in the following set, but Marist had a pair of 3-0 sparked by sophomore Mackenzie O'Brien's hot hand from behind the service line. After her second trip to the line ended, the Bobcats tied the score at 21. An O'Brien kill knotted the score at 25, but a service error and a Bobcats' kill evened the match. O'Brien would finish with nine kills and three aces on the afternoon. Â
With set point for Quinnipiac in the third at 24-21, the Red Foxes' stayed alive with kills from Fergus and Ediger, respectively, and a Quinnipiac attack error. O'Brien swiped an ace for Marist's 25th point of the stanza, but the Red Foxes did not get the necessary two-point cushion until the Fergus-Ediger duo struck again in front.
In the fourth frame, Quinnipiac turned the tides with a 7-3 run that put it ahead 17-16. The score was only tied one more time in that set, as the Bobcats forced Marist to take its two timeouts and forced a decisive fifth period.
On the verge of defeat again, Marist took a timeout down 14-11 but bounced back with three straight points on two kills from Ediger and a finish by freshman Nikki DeSerpa. Four of the final six points went to Quinnipiac however, ending the two hour and 32 minute match.
Junior Elizabeth Kloos contributed all over the court for the Bobcats, tying for the team leads in service aces (three) and blocks (six) and slamming 13 kills. Freshman Maria Pansari dished out 46 assists.
Marist will face the Fairfield Stags, which are currently the top team in the MAAC at 10-0. First serve is slated for 1 p.m. Oct. 16.
