FAIRFIELD, Connecticut - The Marist volleyball team (7-13, 7-3 MAAC) fell to the Fairfield Stags, 3-0 (28-26, 25-18, 25-14), on Oct. 16. Fairfield remained unbeaten in Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference play at 11-0 and improved to 18-5 overall.
Senior Amanda Schlegel finished with a deuces wild stat line of 22 assists and two service aces, both of which were team highs. Sophomore Mackenzie O'Brien slammed nine kills on the attack and senior Lexi Millington had 13 digs and three assists.
There were no lead changes in the opening set, as Fairfield ripped off five straight points to go in front 10-5 in the early going. Marist chipped away at the deficit however, and eventually cut the Stags' lead to three at 22-19 with a Schlegel service ace. Kills from freshman Nikki DeSerpa tied the set twice more and O'Brien slammed a kill to make it 26 all and deny Fairfield its fourth opportunity to win the frame. Fairfield got the two points it needed at that point though, and took a 1-0 lead.
The tides turned in Marist's favor to begin the second set, as the Red Foxes went up 7-4 and led by as many as five points following an ace from Millington. Coming out of its timeout, Fairfield went on an 11-4 scoring spree to go up by two. Both sides were deadlocked at 18 after a Stags' ball handling error, but Fairfield took control the rest of the way with seven consecutive points to end the stanza.
Stags junior Megan Theiller registered match highs of 14 kills and a pair of service aces while freshman setter Manuela Nicolini dished out 24 assists. Fairfield owned an 8-4 edge in blocks and hit .365 for the afternoon. The Stags' defense up front held the Red Foxes to a .103 hitting percentage.
Marist will continue its four-match road trip when it faces arch rival Siena at 1 p.m. Oct. 22. The Red Foxes have swept the Saints in the last two meetings. Â
