RIVERDALE, New York - The Marist volleyball team picked up its fifth win in its last seven matches with a 3-0 shutout at Manhattan on Oct. 2.

The Red Foxes moved to 5-1 in Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference play with the help of 13 kills from freshman Megan Fergus and sophomore Mackenzie O'Brien. Junior Ashton Korona jumped for five blocks, including three solo.

There were 23 ties in the contest and about half of them occurred in the opening set. Neither side led by more than two points as the Red Foxes and Jaspers traded 3-0 runs respectively and the scoreboard read 21-20 in favor of Manhattan. Consecutive kills by Korona gave Marist the final two points of the set and an early 1-0 edge.

It was tit for tat in the second stanza as well until Marist went off on a 9-2 scoring spree to go in front 15-10 and force a Jaspers timeout. The run featured kills from five different players, including a pair from junior Kelsey Ediger. Manhattan came out strong to cut its deficit to one, but strong Marist hitting prevailed in the front row and the Red Foxes went up 2-0.

Senior Lexi Millington swiped back to back service aces at the beginning of the final set to help Marist jump out to a 7-2 lead. The tides turned in favor of the Jaspers again with a 9-3 run that gave them an 11-10 advantage. The Red Foxes regained the lead on an Ediger kill that they would not relinquish the rest of the way however.

Jaspers senior Allie Yamashiro led her team with 15 digs and three service aces. Sophomore Zoe Lindsey dished out a match-high 33 assists. As a team, Marist hit .291 and owned a 10-3 edge in blocks.

The Red Foxes will host Rider at 1 p.m. Oct. 8 in their Dig Pink match for breast cancer awareness.
