LOUDONVILLE, New York - The Marist volleyball team (7-14, 7-4 MAAC) took a 3-1 defeat at Siena in a Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference showdown Oct. 22. Set scores were 25-23, 28-26, 20-25 and 25-15.
Junior Kelsey Ediger picked up her third double-double of the season with a team-best 17 kills alongside 12 digs. Two more team highs came from senior Amanda Schlegel, who dished out 26 assists and swiped three service aces.
The first two sets were tied 10 times each, as both teams dispelled multiple deficits. Marist's second four-point scoring spree of the opening frame put it up 17-15 and forced a Siena timeout. But the Saints punctuated the period with their longest run of the afternoon, a 5-0 burst that gave them the 25-23 victory.
Siena came out of a timeout strong once again in the second set, going on a 12-6 run to shift momentum to its side. Marist kills from Ediger and freshman Megan Fergus tied the stanza at 23. The Saints got the two-point cushion they needed to go up 2-0 though.
Marist trailed only once in the third set, jumping out to a 9-3 lead with sophomore Mackenzie O'Brien serving. A variety of hitters contributed for the Red Foxes, which slammed 14 kills from six different players. Siena fought back with a strong fourth set to take the match however. Â Â Â
As a team, Marist held a 57-53 advantage in kills and led 78-71 in digs. Siena had 12 blocks to the Red Foxes' seven.
Individually for the Saints, redshirt sophomore Brittney Herrick and senior Shantraie Rodriguez each jumped for six blocks. Senior Haley Howell registered a match-high 42 assists.
The Red Foxes will square off against NJIT in a non-conference clash at 1 p.m. Oct. 23. Â Â
