Marist Football's Winning Streak Snapped By San Diego
POUGHKEEPSIE, New York - The Marist football team fell to San Diego at home on Saturday 27-3 in their first Pioneer Football League loss of the season. The loss snapped a four-game winning streak for the Red Foxes, who fell to 4-4 overall this season and 4-1 in PFL play. San Diego moves to 7-1 overall this season and 6-0 in PFL play. Â
San Diego controlled the game from their opening possession. Red-shirt sophomore quarterback Anthony Lawrence led the Toreros on a 15-play. 75-yard drive capped off by a nine-yard touchdown pass to red-shirt junior tight end Ross Dwelley. The touchdown put San Diego up 7-0 with 9:14 left in the first quarter
Marist had a chance to answer on their ensuing possession, driving all the way to the San Diego one-yard line. Red-shirt junior running back Marcellus Calhoun lost a fumble on fourth down from the one yard on a run up the middle, which was recovered by Colton Giorgi. Â
Toreros junior kicker Patrick Murray converted field goal tries from 43 yards and 26 yards out to give San Diego a 13-0 lead, both of which capped drives that took at least 10 plays and over four minutes. Marist senior kicker Mike Maccarone added a 27-yard field goal just before the half to put the Red Foxes on the board and cut the deficit to 13-3. Â
After a scoreless third quarter, San Diego put the game away with two rushing touchdowns by red-shirt senior Jonah Hodges in the fourth quarter. Hodges rushed 33 times for 175 and two touchdowns. Lawrence completed 21 passes on 35 attempts for 195 yards, a touchdown, and an interception. Â
Marist red-shirt sophomore quarterback Mike White completed 12 passes on 34 attempts for 175 yards. White reached the 2,000 yards passing mark for the season early in the first half. This is the second straight season White has thrown for over 2,000 yards. White also led the Red Fox rushing attack with 22 yards on the ground. Calhoun had a team-high four receptions, which went for 43 yards.
Red-shirt sophomore safety Wesley Beans was a defensive standout for Marist with eight tackles, an interception, and a fumble recovery on the day. Beans' interception, which occurred in the first quarter, was his sixth of the season and his fourth straight game with an interception. Red-shirt junior linebacker Ruben Avalos III led Marist with 11 tackles, which tied a career high.Â
San Diego gained 423 total yards of offense, converting 12 of their 19 third downs, and scored on all five of their red zone possessions. Marist gained 201 yards of offense and went 3-for-12 on third down. The Toreros held the ball for 40:50, including 23:42 in the second half.
Marist will head to Stetson next weekend for another PFL matchup on Saturday, November 5. Kick-off is set for 2 p.m. Â
