Berardelli Earns Two NCAA Berths In Win Over Rider

POUGHKEEPSIE, New York - Junior Megan Berardelli qualified for the NCAA Zone A Qualifier Diving Championships on both boards as the Marist women's swimming and diving team beat Rider, 186-109, on Oct. 29 in McCann Natatorium.

Berardelli placed first in the 1- and 3-meter dives, surpassing the standard scores for the national meet in March. She won the 1-meter event after racking up  277.05 points and took the top spot at three meters with 293.10 points. Sophomore Lauren Katz finished second at one meter (242.85 points) and third at three meters (250.05 points) by 1.27 points.

Upper and underclassmen paved the way for the Red Foxes, as senior Isabella Morreale and freshman Courtney Levins went 1-2 in the 100- and 200-yard breaststroke. Morreale clocked in at 1:06.33 and 2:25.68 respectively while Levins followed suit with finishes of 1:08.28 and 2:26.43.

Senior Meredith Wurtz anchored the first place 200-yard medley relay team and won the 50- (24.36 seconds) and 100-yard (53.37 seconds) freestyle to compile 29 points for Marist. The Red Foxes also went 1-2-3 in the 500- and 1000-yard freestyle led by junior Sara Nestrowitz, who clocked in at 5:14.32 and 10:39.47 correspondingly. Classmate Melanie Newton was next in the 500 (5:17.97) and third at 1,000 yards (10:53.70). Junior Deirdre Connor was third place at 500 yards (5:19.75) and classmate Shannon Gordon was no. 2 at 1,000 yards (10:47.53).    

Marist will head to Fairfield for the first time in three years to face the Stags in another MAAC dual meet at 1 p.m. Nov. 5.
