FAIRFIELD, Connecticut -- The Marist men's soccer team began its Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference road schedule on the wrong foot, falling to the Fairfield Stags 3-1 on Saturday night.

With the loss, Marist falls to 6-4-1 (1-2 MAAC) while the win lifts Fairfield to 5-4-2 (3-1 MAAC).

"It was a tough game" said head coach Matt Viggiano. "We were missing some key peices, the weather wasn't great and we struggled to find our footing in the first half. We had a good chance to make it 2-2 in the second half and we didn't bury it and we gave up a third and that was the end of it. We had our opportunities no doubt about. Fairfield is a solid team but we had our opportunities and we didn't bury them. In the MAAC when you don't bury your chances they come back and bite you. We had the ball go across the goal mouth three or four times and nobody was there to put it in. Missed opportunities."

Alex Cancilla scored the lone Red Foxes goal in the 30th minute, his first of his career.

The Stags held a 17-10 advantage in shots and an 8-6 lead in shots on goal while Marist held a 6-3 advantage in corner kicks.

Coming off their first MAAC win on Wednesday, the Red Foxes looked to continue their momentum on Saturday.

However, it was Fairfield that scored first, just over 14 minutes in when a Diallo Simon-Ponte pass found and open Didirk Angell who rifled a bicycle kick from the center of the box into the back of the net for the 1-0 lead.

Marist answered back roughly 15 minutes later when Cancilla stole the ball from a Stag defender and beat the keeper 1 v1 to tie the game on his first career goal.

The game did not remain tied for long though as Fairfield regained the lead in the 41st minute when Diego Casielles found Martin Lindgren who put the ball home for the 2-1 lead.

Just 59 seconds into the second half, Cameron Harr nearly had a chance to tie the game but his shot was saved by Stag goalie Joe Martin.

Numerous corner kick opportunites for the Red Foxes were unable to find the tying goal and with less than 10 minutes remaining, Fairfield extended its lead to 3-1 when Joseph Meyer picked the pocket of a Marist defender and knocked the ball into the open net.

With the two goal advantage, Fairfield's defense stayed strong and denied several Marist chances to get back into it and the final whistle sounded with the Stag's victorious 3-1.

Up next, the Red Foxes travel to Buffalo, NY for a MAAC matchup against the Canisius Golden Griffins on Wed. Oct. 12th at 4 PM.
