LAWRENCEVILLE, New Jersey - The Marist volleyball team concluded the 2016 regular season 13-16 overall and 12-6 in Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference play following a 3-0 loss at Rider on Nov. 13. The Broncs won each set 25-21.
Entering today's contest, the Red Foxes had clinched the no. 2 seed in the MAAC Championships to earn a first round bye and will play the winner of the match between no. 3 Quinnipiac and no. 6 Niagara in their first postseason contest.
Sophomore Mackenzie O'Brien tied a career high with 15 kills alongside six digs against the Broncs and junior Kelsey Ediger contributed all over the court slamming six kills, diving for three digs, and leaping for a pair of blocks.
Rider took advantage of Marist's errors in the first set to pull in front 13-6. O'Brien helped Marist side out a few times and cut into the deficit by hammering eight kills in the opening frame. A 5-1 Red Foxes run with senior Lexi Millington serving moved Marist to within two at 20-18, but the Broncs finished off strong to go ahead 1-0.
Millington would end the day with a pair of service aces to move her career total to 205, the most among active players. She also dove for nine digs. Â Â
Both sides traded the first eight points of the second stanza before Rider bursted out on a 5-1 scoring spree. Freshman Nikki DeSerpa helped Marist's offense respond, slamming five kills in the set and swiping two service aces. The Red Foxes took a 21-20 lead, but Rider struck back just as hard to go ahead 2-0.
The Red Foxes had the Broncs on their heels in the third set, using a variety of hitters to construct an 11-7 lead and force a Rider timeout. The Broncs attack went off with 13 kills, five of which came consecutively, from that point on and eventually took the match.
Marist will enter the MAAC Championships as the no. 2 seed for the second straight season. It awaits its semifinal round opponent, which will be the winner of the first round match between Quinnipiac and Niagara slated for 5 p.m. Nov. 18. First serve for the Red Foxes' semifinal match will be 5 p.m. Nov. 19.
