KINGSTON- Rhode Island - The Marist women's basketball team dropped its second non-conference game of the season falling to the University of Rhode Island, 82-61, Sunday afternoon at the Ryan Center in Kingston, Rhode Island.
Allie Clement and Claire Oberdorf set new career highs. Clement set a new career high in points with 19 while Oberdorf also set a new career high in free throws made and attempted going 9-for-12 from the line.
Marist ended the game shooting 22-for-63 (.349) from the field while Rhode Island finished 32-for-64 (.500) overall. The Red Foxes totaled 16 turnovers to the Rams 14 and were outrebounded by Rhode Island, 44-38.
The Red Foxes started the game 5-0 before Rhode Island reeled off a 10-0 run to take the lead. Marist found themselves in the penalty early as the Rams marched to the free throw line often throughout the first quarter. Rhode Island shot 5-for-8 from the stripe and took a 19-12 lead into the second.
The second half played out more evenly than the first with both teams trading threes and baskets. Clement finished the first half 5-for-11 from the field for 12 points and Oberdorf added 10 points for the Red Foxes after some aggressive takes to the basket and trips to the free throw line.
Rhode Island started the new half on the offensive, running off a 7-0 run to push the Rams lead to 18 early in the third. The Rams would hold that lead for most of the third quarter, entering the fourth with a 60-41 lead.
The Rams would push the lead to 21 early in the fourth, their second largest lead of the game and Marist would get no closer than down 15 in the final period.
The Red Foxes head back to Poughkeepsie for their home opener on Tuesday, November 15th against Seton Hall. Tip-off is scheduled for 7 p.m. at McCann Arena.
