POUGHKEEPSIE, New York – The Marist men's basketball team lost a close contest to Vermont, 76-72, on Nov. 16 in its 2016-17 home opener.

The Catamounts, who were the preseason favorite to win the America East, are now 2-1 on the young season. The Red Foxes are 0-3.

Red-shirt senior guard Khallid Hart led the Red Foxes with 21 points and went 7-for-14 from the field. He moved into ninth place on Marist's all-time scoring list. Sophomore forward Ryan Funk hit six three-pointers and put up 19 points, both of which were career highs.

Vermont scored seven straight points to jump out to a 9-2 lead just 3:06 into the contest. The Catamounts led by as much as 14 in the first half. However, back-to-back three-pointers by sophomore forward Isaiah Lamb and Hart on the Red Foxes' last two possession of the half cut their deficit to 37-29 heading into the locker room.

Marist outscored Vermont in the second stanza 43-39, as the Red Foxes hit their stride starting with a put back dunk by senior Kentrall Brooks that cut the Catamounts advantage to five with 19:08 to play. A 9-0 scoring spree also kept Marist in the game, which cut Vermont's lead from 11 to two with 6:32 left.

The Red Foxes took their first lead with 2:26 remaining when Hart went coast to coast with a swipe and a layup to put Marist in front 69-67. Vermont hit a pair of free throws to go in front 74-71 within the final minute and Hart made a free throw to cut it to two. But the Catamounts scored on their final possession as time expired.

Marist will return to action on Saturday, Nov. 19, when it takes on Brown in the next round of the Hall of Fame Tip-Off Tournament in Mohegan Sun Arena in Uncasville, CT. The contest is slated for 5:30 p.m. The Red Foxes will take on Grand Canyon the following evening at 6 to close out the tournament.
