SAVANNAH, Georgia – For the second consecutive day the Red Foxes dropped a close contest against stiff competition, falling to Auburn 52-51, during day two of the Savannah Invitational.
Hannah Hand led the way for Marist, scoring 14 points and grabbing nine rebounds while Rebekah Hand was the other Red Fox in double-digits, totaling 10 points and five rebounds.
The Red Foxes headed to break trailing the Tigers 29-20. An 8-0 run spanning four minutes during the second quarter while holding Auburn scoreless for the same amount of time brought the Red Foxes back to within two. Auburn responded by closing the half on 7-0 run.
Auburn's aggressive press defense forced the Red Foxes into numerous turnovers throughout the half, as Marist went into break with 15 mishandles. Marist pressured back however and stymied the Tigers on offense for long stretches throughout the half, forcing nine turnovers of their own and holding Auburn to 12-for-35 (.340) shooting in the first half.
The Red Foxes connected on 4-for-12 (.330) of their three point attempts in the first half and went a perfect 8-for-8 from the free throw stripe.
The Hand twins opened the new half with back-to-back three balls to cut the deficit down to 29-26 just a minute into the third. A 4-0 run by Auburn during a stretch with five Marist turnovers was snapped by another three from Hannah Hand with just under six minutes to go in the third. The three pulled Marist to within four.
Another five minute scoring drought for Auburn coupled with a three from Hannah Hand and a two from Maura Fitzpatrick gave the Red Foxes the lead at 34-33 with 2:41 to go. It was the Red Foxes first lead since the 9:09 mark in the first quarter.
Auburn finally snapped a 0-for-10 stretch with three straight field goals to take back the lead and go up by five. An Oberdorf three with under a minute left broke the Tigers 6-0 run and cut the deficit to two heading into the final period.
Five turnovers for Marist in the first five minutes of the fourth and a 7-0 run for Auburn gave the Tigers a 46-39 lead with 4:43 to go in the game. Consecutive trips to the free throw stripe for Marist as a result of Auburn being in the penalty pulled the Red Foxes back to within four with just over four to go.
A corner three by Lovisa Henningsdottir with eight seconds left to go brought Marist back to within two but Auburn, after making just one-of-two free throws, was able to hold on for the 52-51 victory.
The Red Foxes conclude play at the Savannah Invitational tomorrow afternoon against North Carolina A&T. Tip-off for the Red Foxes finale in Georgia is set for 2 P.M.
