POUGHKEEPSIE, New York – The Marist men's basketball team defeated UMass Lowell River Hawks, 81-69, for its first victory of the season in McCann Arena on Nov. 29. Â
Tuesday night's win was the Red Foxes' second straight and improves Marist's overall record to 3-4, while UMass Lowell falls to 2-6.
UMass Lowell took an early lead in the game with the help of quick ball distribution. The River Hawks assisted on their first seven baskets and hit on four of their eight three-pointers to start the game. Red-shirt junior guard Jahad Thomas led the way with 23 points on 10-for-18 shooting and grabbed 14 rebounds. Junior guard Matt Harris added 14 points on 4-10 shooting from three-point range.Â
The Red Foxes found a spark late in the first half when sophomore guard Brian Parker drove to the basket for a hoop and a harm to complete a three-point play. Red-shirt senior guard Khallid Hart came up with the steal on the ensuing UMass Lowell possession, which led to a three from sophomore forward Kristinn Palsson. Palsson's three-pointer gave Marist a 23-22 lead with 4:21 left in the first half, and the Red Foxes were in front the rest of the way. The plays were part of an 18-0 Marist run, and the Red Foxes finished the first half on a 23-4 run to take a 36-26 lead into halftime.Â
Marist was able to control much of the second half tempo, and never led by less than four the rest of the way. Hart tied a game high with 23 points, aided by a flawless 9-for-9 from the free throw line. This was Hart's fourth game of the season and 29th of his career in which he scored 20 or more points. Hart also led Marist by dishing out five assists against just one turnover, and added five rebounds.
Sophomore forward Ryan Funk provided life for the Red Foxes' offense throughout the game with his three-point shooting. He connected on five of his nine three-point attempts, finishing the game with a career-high 20 points, which included a four-point play. He also snatched five rebounds.Â
Parker added 14 points and senior center Kentrall Brooks led Marist in rebounds, pulling down 10 in 14 minutes. Â
