WEST LONG BRANCH, New Jersey – The Marist women's soccer team fell to the Monmouth Hawks, 4-1, in the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference Championships semifinal Friday evening. Brianna Robinson scored the lone goal for the Red Foxes in the 84th minute with an assist from Ashlee Burke.
Monmouth took the 1-0 lead in the 20th minute of the first half after the Hawks won a 50-50 ball at centerfield and played the advantage down the sideline. Rachelle Ross crossed it in front to Madie Gibson who knocked it home from point-blank range in front of net.
In the 33rd minute the Hawks capitalized again on a quick hitting play as Gibson found Rachael Ivanicki in the box. Ivanicki was able to high point the ball up and over the Red Foxes keeper and lone defender and into the lower corner of the net.
The teams stayed scoreless for the next 48 minutes battling until Monmouth's Rachelle Ross split the defense and made it 3-0 in the Hawks favor. After Robinson's goal in the 84th minute, Monmouth scored again with 16 seconds left to make it 4-1.
With the win Monmouth moves on to face the winner of Siena-Quinnipiac. The loss ends Marist's season as the Red Foxes finish 2016 at 10-9-1 overall and 5-4-1 in MAAC play.
