NEWARK, Delaware ?? The Marist men's basketball team suffered a 59-56 loss at Delaware in a non-conference game on Tuesday night at the Bob Carpenter Center.
Sophomore guard Brian Parker grabbed a career-high 15 rebounds and tied for the team lead with 14 points. Sophomore forward Ryan Funk, who drained four three-pointers, also scored 14. Red-shirt senior guard Khallid Hart gave the Red Foxes three double-digit scorers with 10. Freshman center Tobias Sjoberg contributed six points, five rebounds and career highs of four blocked shots and two steals.
Anthony Mosley led a balanced Delaware scoring attack with 13 points, and tied for the team high with eight rebounds. Four Blue Hens scored in double digits, including Ryan Daly, who also grabbed eight rebounds and scored 10 points off the bench.
In the first half, Marist shot just 8-for-29 (.276) from the field, 2-for-14 (.143) from three-point range, and 5-for-11 (.455) from the foul line. The Red Foxes trailed by as much as 10 in the first half, and were down 31-23 after the first 20 minutes.
However, the Red Foxes hit their first three shots of the second half on two baskets by Parker and a three from Funk to cut their deficit to three. The Blue Hens expanded their lead back to 10 on a jumper by Skye Johnson with 13:20 left. However, Marist held Delaware to just one field goal over the next 7:15, and took its first lead of the second half on a three by Funk with 5:03 left. However, the Blue Hens took the lead back just 23 seconds later on a basket by Daly.
The score remained 52-51 in favor of the Blue Hens until a layup by sophomore guard David Knudsen gave the Red Foxes back the lead with 1:58 left. But Delaware re-claimed the lead for good on a three-pointer by Devonne Pinkard with 42 seconds remaining.
With 8.5 seconds to go, Hart was fouled, and split a pair of free throws. Pinkard was then fouled with 7.6 seconds left. He made the first to put the Blue Hens up two, but Daly secured an offensive rebound after he missed the second. Daly then split two free throws with 5.0 seconds left, which gave Delaware a 57-54 lead. Hart was then fouled with 2.6 seconds left and made both free throws. Cazmon Hayes then drained two free throws with 1.9 seconds for Delaware, and Marist committed a turnover on its final possession.
Marist fell to 4-8; Delaware improved to 6-5. The Red Foxes play their final non-conference game of the regular season on Friday, when the travel to Holy Cross for a 12:05 p.m. tip-off.
Notes: Hart moved past Alan Tomidy for eighth place on Marist's all-time scoring list, and now has 1,512 career points. Next on the list in seventh place is Jared Jordan with 1,538 points. ...
