WORCESTER, Massachusetts – The Marist men's basketball team fell to defending Patriot League champion Holy Cross in its final non-conference game of the season on Friday afternoon. The Crusaders defeated the Red Foxes by a score of 68-59 at the Hart Center.
“They're experienced and very well coached,” Marist head coach Mike Maker said of the Crusaders. “We need to do a better job of getting shots on our end. It's discipline on both ends of the court. We have a ways to go to get where we all want to get to.”
Sophomore guard Brian Parker led the Red Foxes in points (16), rebounds (nine), and assists (five). Parker shot 6-for-8 from the field, 2-for-2 from three-point range, and 2-for-2 from the free-throw line. Red-shirt senior guard Khallid Hart scored 12 points. He shot 4-for-6 from the field, 2-for-3 from three-point range, and 2-for-2 from the free-throw line. Sophomore forward Ryan Funk had 10 points, putting him in double digits for the seventh straight game.
Robert Champion led four Crusaders in double digits with a game-high 23 points. The Crusaders shot 24-for-46 (.522) from the field, and forced 18 Marist turnovers, which enabled them to have a 31-2 advantage in points off turnovers.
“I thought we defended well in the halfcourt,” Maker said. “But it's hard to defend against turnovers out in transition.”
Marist got off to a fast start as Funk hit three-pointers on the Red Foxes' first two possessions. However, Holy Cross grabbed the lead thanks to a 12-0 run, and never relinquished it. Marist fought back as a three-pointer by Hart cut the Red Foxes' deficit to 31-29 with 1:48 left in the first half. Holy Cross led 36-31 going into halftime.
Holy Cross extended its lead to 20 thanks to a 13-0 run in the second half, as Marist went scoreless for 6:20. The Crusaders' lead reached a game high of 21 with 7:56 to go, but Marist outscored Holy Cross 19-7 the rest of the way. The Red Foxes cut their deficit to as little as seven with under 30 seconds to go.
“I'm proud of how we finished the game,” Maker said. “It could have gotten away from us, and it didn't.”
Marist is now 4-9; Holy Cross is 6-7.
Friday's game was the last for the Red Foxes in non-conference play this season. Marist will return to action on Saturday, Dec. 31 at Metro Atlantic Athletic conference rival Iona. Tip-off is set for 1 p.m.
