POUGHKEEPSIE, New York - The Marist men's basketball team defeated the Niagara Purple Eagles, 72-66, for its second straight home victory and first Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference win of the season Dec. 2 in McCann Arena. Â
Friday night's win was the Red Foxes' third straight and improves Marist's overall record to 4-4, while Niagara falls to 1-6.
Senior center Kentrall Brooks provided life for the Red Foxes' offense throughout the night with his first career double-double. He put up a career-high 17 points alongside 10 rebounds and tied his career high with three blocks. Brooks was also a perfect 5-for-5 from the free throw line.Â
Sophomore Ryan Funk added 16 points and sophomore Brian Parker also contributed with 14 points and four rebounds. Sophomore Kristinn Palsson set a career high with six assists.
Marist jumped out to an early lead in the game with the help of sharp 10-for-19 shooting from the field. The Purple Eagles countered with a spark later in the first half, ending on a 6-2 run and cutting Marist's 10-point lead down to five.
In the second half, the lead changed hands four times in a span of less than two-and-a-half minutes. With 14:49 left, a three-pointer by sophomore forward Isaiah Lamb put Marist up for good. However, the Red Foxes never led by more than eight over the final 20 minutes. The Purple Eagles got within one on three occasions in the final six minutes, but were never able to tie or take the lead.
With 1:46 to play, two free throws by Maurice Taylor Jr. brought Niagara to within one. On the ensuing possession, Brooks followed a Parker miss with a dunk. Two free throws by red-shirt junior guard Kahlil Dukes brought Niagara to within two with 41 seconds left, but Funk answered with a three on the Red Foxes' next possession. Marist then sealed the victory by going 3-for-4 from the free-throw line in the final 12 seconds. Niagara did not hit a field goal in the final 5:59.
The Red Foxes improved from the free throw line in the second half, finishing 10-for-16 from the charity stripe for the game and finishing 75 percent in the second half (9-for-12). Niagara made all of its free throws in the second half for a final mark of 96.3 percent. Marist shot 25 percent (6-for-24) from three point range to the Purple Eagles mark of 19 percent (4-for-21). Â
Dukes led all Purple Eagles in scoring with 18 points and dished out three assists. Junior guard Matt Scott added 15, and sophomore Dominic Robb put up 10 and swatted a team-high three blocks.Â
The Red Foxes will continue MAAC play when they visit Quinnipiac in their next game on Sunday, December 4, in Hamden, Connecticut. Tip-off is set for 2 p.m.
