NEW ROCHELLE, New York - The Marist men's basketball team suffered a 93-80 loss at Iona in a Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference game at the Hynes Center on Saturday afternoon.
The Red Foxes hit a season-high 15 three-pointers in 25 attempts. Sophomore forward Ryan Funk led Marist with 17 points, and was 5-for-7 from deep. Sophomore forward Isaiah Lamb hit all five of his three-point attempts, and finished with 15 points. Sophomore guard Brian Parker had his third double-double of the season with 11 points and 11 rebounds. Parker led the Red Foxes in rebounds, and also had a team-high six assists.
Marist led for 21:42 of the contest, but a 16-0 Iona run in the second half gave the Gaels the lead for good.
"Our body language changed," head coach Mike Maker said. "I thought we got deflated. ... It's tough sledding in the MAAC when you don't play 40-minute games."
The Red Foxes started hot, hitting their first three field goals on threes by Funk and Parker, and a jumper by red-shirt senior guard Khallid Hart. Funk hit three three-pointers in the first four minutes, and Marist hit six of its first seven field goals as the Red Foxes jumped out to an early 16-8 lead. A three-pointer by Lamb gave Marist a 24-12 lead, but Iona clawed back with a 10-0 run. The Gaels tied the game with 3:56 left in the half at 36 all, as Sam Cassell Jr. scored eight consecutive Iona points. Iona took its first lead with 1:14 left in the half on a jumper by Rickey McGill, and the Gaels led 47-44 after the first 20 minutes.
The Red Foxes outscored the Gaels 15-5 in the first 3:34 of the second half. A three-pointer by sophomore forward Kristinn Palsson put Marist up 59-52 with 16:26 remaining. Iona answered with a 7-0 run. A three-pointer by Lamb gave Marist its final lead at 64-61 with 13:39 left, but the Red Foxes went scoreless over the next 5:56 as the Gaels reeled off 16 straight points. Iona's lead reached as high as 23 before the Marist went on a 12-2 spurt over the final three-and-a-half minutes.
"It's definitely a tool to learn from," Funk said. "Looking back at it, we have to play hard and smart for a full 40."
Iona, which shot 34-for-61 (.557) from the field, had five double-digit scorers. Jordan Washington had a game-high 26 points and eight rebounds in 21 minutes. Cassell finished with 19 points and seven assists, while McGill tallied 18 points and 10 assists. For the game, the Gaels had 21 assists and just four turnovers, while the Red Foxes had 18 assists against 15 turnovers. Iona held a 21-6 edge in points off turnovers.
"I give a lot of credit to Iona," Maker said. "They're long and they mix it up defensively. They get a turnover and they're off to the races."
Marist is 4-10 overall and 1-2 in the MAAC; Iona is 9-5 on the season and 2-1 in the conference.
Marist returns to McCann Arena on Monday, Jan. 2 when the Red Foxes host Manhattan in a MAAC contest. Tip-off is scheduled for 7 p.m. Tickets are available at MaristTickets.com.
