NIAGARA UNIV., New York – The Marist women's basketball team got back on track and defeated the Niagara Purple Eagles, 82-68, in a Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference matchup Friday evening at the Gallagher Center. With the win the Red Foxes move to 13-12 overall and 12-3 in conference. Niagara falls to 6-18 overall and 4-11 in the MAAC.
Tori Jarosz led the Red Foxes season high scoring output, tallying her 19th double-double of the season, scoring 24 points and grabbing 15 rebounds to go along with three blocks. Allie Clement, making her first start of the season off the bench, recorded a new career high in points, scoring 18 on 6-for-7 shooting from behind the arc.
Sydney Coffey scored 16 points and tied a career high in assists with eight. Claire Oberdorf scored nine points, going 3-for-4 from downtown, grabbed five rebounds, and had two assists.
Marist overall shot 30-for-55 (.545) from the field and went 12-for-19 (.632) from three point range. It was the Red Foxes second game in a row with 12 three pointers made.
The Red Foxes seemed to have regained their offensive efficiency right from the jump with Jarosz back in the lineup. Marist jumped out to an 8-2 lead to start the game, extended that lead to 20-10, and closed out the first quarter with a 24-15 lead. Coffey who was aggressive from the start, led all scorers with nine points on 4-for-5 shooting on some nice step back jumpers and shifty takes to the hoop.
After Niagara scored the first four points of the second quarter to get within five, Marist rattled off an 8-0 run capped by back-to-back three pointers from Oberdorf. The Red Foxes flurry forced a Niagara timeout with 5:41 to go in the half and Marist up 31-19.
The Red Foxes run didn't stop there, as the team ended up outscoring Niagara 25-10 from the moment the Purple Eagles had cut it down to five.
Jarosz led all scorers in the first half with 14 points and seven rebounds including her first career made three pointer. The Red Foxes as a team shot 8-for-11 from deep in the first half, as the team tied their mark for most points in a half (1/30/16 at Rider), and carried a 49-29 lead into halftime.
Clement, who didn't start because of illness, knocked down all three of her attempts from deep leading Marist from downtown in the hot shooting half.
After playing an even third quarter, as both teams scored 17 points apiece, a layup from Niagara's Taylor McKay cut the Purple Eagles deficit down to 13 with 6:35 to go in the fourth quarter. The Red Foxes responded with a 6-0 run with layups from Coffey and two from Jarosz to push the lead back up to 76-57 in the Red Foxes favor. Niagara would get no closer than 14 points for the remainder.
The Red Foxes conclude their western New York swing as they take on Canisius for the first time this season. The game against the Golden Griffins is the Red Foxes second of three road games in a row and the tip time is set for 2 p.m. on Sunday, February 14th.
