BUFFALO, New York – Despite Sydney Coffey setting the Marist women's basketball program record for points in a game with 38, the Red Foxes fell to the Canisius Golden Griffins, 71-69, Sunday afternoon at the Koessler Center in Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference action. With the loss the Red Foxes move to 13-13 overall and 12-4 in conference play. Canisius improves to 11-14 overall and 6-10 in the MAAC.
Coffey was unstoppable in the first half and fourth quarter, and was able to best the 24 year old record despite being held scoreless in the third quarter. Coffey finished 12-for-26 from the field, hit five three pointers, and went 7-for-9 from the free throw line. Coffey also grabbed five rebounds and dished out four assists while playing every single minute of the game.
Tori Jarosz secured her 20th double-double of the season scoring 19 points to go along with 11 rebounds while shooting 7-for-15 from the field and 5-for-5 from the free throw line. Marist had no other scorers in double digits.
The Griffins held a decisive rebounding edge over the Red Foxes, and while playing without a definitive point guard, rebounded well from every position on the floor. At least four Griffins had over five rebounds and four others had four each.
Canisius started the game 3-for-3 from the field and took a 7-0 lead that forced a Marist timeout just two minutes into the game. The timeout didn't slow the Canisius attack as the Griffins jumped out to a 14-4 lead as the Red Foxes started 2-for-12 from the field. The Red Foxes finally caught fire with less than two minutes to go in the first.
Eileen Van Horn and Coffey drilled back-to-back triples and Maura Fitzpatrick knocked down a long jumper as the Red Foxes cut the lead to 16-14 in the Griffins favor. A buzzer beating layup from Canisius' Saliah Serrette ended the Red Foxes flurry of buckets and gave the Griffins an 18-14 lead heading into the second.
The Red Foxes came out with the offensive aggressiveness they lacked in the first. Coffey scored the first seven for Marist in the quarter and knotted the game at 21-21 just two minutes into the second. The Red Foxes then rattled off a 7-0 run to take a 28-21 lead with 6:28 to go in the half.
Coffey finished the first half with 23 points on 7-for-13 shooting from the field and went 7-for-9 from the free throw line. After a season high 29 points in the second quarter, the Red Foxes carried a 43-35 lead into the locker room.
Canisius started the new half the same way they started the first, taking the lead at 45-43 after a 10-0 run to start the third quarter. Two free throws from Jarosz with just under four minutes to go broke the Red Foxes third quarter scoreless drought and tied it at 45-45.
After a prolonged scoring drought for both teams a mid-range jumper from Jarosz regained the lead for Marist at 47-45. A layup from Canisius' Crystal Porter tied the game for the fourth time as the game headed to the fourth quarter at 47-47. The Red Foxes had followed up their season high in points in a quarter with their season low (4).
Morgan Bartner started off the scoring for the Red Foxes in the fourth, banking in a deep wing three to give Marist a three point advantage. The Griffins answered right back going on a 9-0 run to take a 56-50 lead with 6:12 to go.
Coffey, who was held scoreless in the third, knocked down a three that broke the run and cut the deficit back down to three. Coffey then hit a three from straight away to tie the score but missed the free throw that would've made it a four point play. Coffey would go on to score 15 of the Red Foxes 22 points in the quarter including a deep three with less than three seconds remaining to clinch the program record.
Two free throws from Coffey with 1:23 to go tied the game for the last time. Canisius answered right back with a layup and then a strong defensive effort led to a shot clock violation and a four point lead for the Griffins that they would hold on to for the final minute.
The Red Foxes continue on the road and take on the MAAC's hottest team, the Quinnipiac Bobcats, Thursday evening in Hamden, Connecticut. Tip-off is scheduled for 5 p.m.
