BRIDGEPORT, Connecticut – The Marist men's basketball team suffered a 76-73 loss to Fairfield on Monday night at Webster Bank Arena in a Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference game.

Freshman guard Brian Parker led the Red Foxes with 20 points in addition to five rebounds and a team-high four assists. Freshman forward/guard Kristinn Palsson finished with 17 points, six rebounds and three assists against just one turnover. Junior center Kentrall Brooks scored a career-high 12 points and had a team-high seven rebounds.

“Really proud of the effort we showed,” head coach Mike Maker said. “I thought we played very well and deserved to win.”

Fairfield had four double-digit scorers, led by Jerry Johnson with a game-high 25 points. Johnson shot 8-for-11 from the field and 7-for-9 from three-point range. Marcus Gilbert finished with 20 points and a team-high seven rebounds. Tyler Nelson (15) and Curtis Cobb (10) also scored in double digits for the Stags.

The first half included four lead changes and four ties. A three-pointer by Johnson with 6:55 left in the half gave Fairfield its largest lead of the first 20 minutes at 23-15, but Marist answered with a 12-0 surge to go in front. A jumper by Johnson knotted the score at 28, but the Red Foxes scored the final five points of the half on a three-pointer by freshman forward Ryan Funk and a basket by Parker, which gave Marist a 33-28 advantage after the first 20 minutes.

A 10-0 run by Marist early in the second half gave Marist its largest lead of 13 at 43-30. The Red Foxes led by 13 on four occasions in the final 20 minutes, the last of which came on a three-pointer by Palsson with 11:30 remaining. Coming out of the under-12 media timeout with 10:44 remaining, the Red Foxes still held a 51-38 advantage. In the next 58 seconds after the timeout, the Stags hit three-pointers on three straight possessions, which trimmed the Marist lead to four.

The Red Foxes still held the lead until a jumper by Gilbert tied the score at 66 with 2:55 remaining. Parker and Gilbert each drained two free throws on each team's ensuing possession, but Fairfield took the lead for good on a three-pointer by Johnson with 1:27 left. Marist's only field goal in the final 3:41 was a three-pointer by Palsson at the final buzzer from just in front of the half-court line.
