POUGHKEEPSIE, New York – The Marist men's basketball team defeated Rider by a score of 71-58 on Tuesday in a Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference game at McCann Arena.
Freshman swingman Kristinn Palsson led the Red Foxes with a career-high 19 points on 7-for-9 shooting from the floor, including 5-for-6 from three point range to go along with eight rebounds and two assists. Palsson had no turnovers in a team-high 37 minutes. Red-shirt junior Khallid Hart chipped in 18 points on 5-for-11 shooting from the field and 7-for-7 from the free throw line. Hart had zero turnovers in 34 minutes. Junior center Kentrall Brooks had a game-high nine rebounds.
Jimmie Taylor led the Broncs with 15 points. Xavier Lundy contributed 12 points and seven rebounds off the bench. The seven rebounds tied Lundy for the team high with Teddy Okereafor, who hadded eight points, five assists and three steals while playing all 40 minutes.
Marist led for 28:09 of the game. The Red Foxes jumped out to an early 10-3 lead, as Rider had just one field goal in the first 6:56. With 6:50 left in the first half, a three-pointer by Taylor gave Rider its first lead at 20-19. The Broncs led by as much as six in the first half, and a layup at the buzzer by Josh Williams gave Rider a 37-33 lead heading into the locker room.
With 15:30 to play, a three-pointer by freshman swingman David Knudsen gave Marist back the lead at 47-45, and the Red Foxes remained in front the rest of the way. Knudsen's three was part of 18-4 Marist run over a span of 10:23. Rider never got within eight points in the final 10 minutes, and the Red Foxes led by as much as 16.
Marist shot .480 from the field, .400 from behind the arc and .882 from the charity stripe. Rider shot .350 from the floor, .389 from three point range and .500 from the free throw line. Rider shot .258 (8-for-31) in the second half.
The Red Foxes outrebounded the Broncs 38-32 and had 12 assists to Rider's 10. Marist committed just 10 turnovers, and Rider had just five.
Marist will wrap up the regular season on Friday, when the Red Foxes take on Quinnipiac. Tip-off is scheduled for 7 p.m. Prior to the game, the Red Foxes will honor their senior class of Phillip Lawrence-Ricks, Eric Truog and manager Deion Hicks.
