LOUDONVILLE, New York – The Marist women's basketball team fell to the Siena Saints, 60-56, Thursday night at the Alumni Recreation Center. With the loss the Red Foxes are locked into the three seed and a matchup with the winner of the 6/11 seed matchup. The loss also snaps a 25 game winning streak over Siena and brings the Red Foxes record to 14-15 overall and 13-6 in the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference. Siena moves to 13-16 overall and 10-9 in conference.
Tori Jarosz recorded her 23rd double-double of the season with 17 points and 10 rebounds on 6-for-12 shooting from the field. Claire Oberdorf scored 12 points and pulled down five rebounds in 37 minutes.
For Siena, Jackie Benitez led the team in scoring with 21 points, Symone Kelly put up a double-double of her own with 10 points and 11 rebounds, and Emmanuella Edoka was a huge difference maker, scoring seven points and grabbing 15 rebounds, eight of them on the offensive end.
The turnover battle ended with Siena holding a 16-13 advantage in turns forced but the real edge was on the glass as the Saints hustled their way to 19 offensive rebounds to the Red Foxes four. The advantage on the glass led to Saints taking 22 more shots than the Red Foxes.
Starting 4-for-5 from the field the Red Foxes doubled up Siena, 12-6, early in the first quarter. A wing three from Maura Fitzpatrick extended the lead to 15-6 and forced a Siena timeout with just over five to go in the first. The Red Foxes went cold however as Siena rattled off a 6-0 run during a four minute Marist scoring drought. The Red Foxes finished the quarter shooting 6-for-13 from the field and 3-for-9 from deep and led 19-17 at the end of one.
The Red Foxes and Saints both locked in on defense starting the new quarter, holding each other to three points each in the first five minutes of the second. Marist looked to carry a six point lead into halftime after two free throws from Oberdorf extended the Red Foxes lead. That was until the Saints' Jackie Benitez drilled a half court buzzer beater to get Siena back within three.
Overall Marist finished the first half 9-for-21 from the field, good for 43 percent, and 5-for-12 from behind the arc. The Saints were able to keep it close behind a plethora of offensive rebounds, putting up 19 more shots than Marist thanks to 13 offensive boards and 11 forced turnovers.
The Red Foxes again pulled out to a nine point lead to start the third quarter but again Siena battled back. The Saints went on a 6-0 run before a pull up jumper from Sydney Coffey halted it and put Marist back up by five, 41-36, with 4:22 to go in the third.
Undeterred the Saints rattled off a 9-2 run to take a brief 45-43 lead with just under two to go in the third. After free throws from Oberdorf, a bucket from Siena's Symone Kelly, and two more free throws from Jarosz, the teams headed to the fourth locked at 47 all.
With 2:25 to go in the fourth the Red Foxes and Saints traded baskets and the lead. First Siena's Kelly scored on a take to the hoop to put Siena up 53-52. Jarosz then answered right back for Marist with a layup of her own, regaining the Marist lead.
A corner three from Siena's Jackie Benitez put the Saints up three with under a minute to go. A tough take from Coffey on the ensuing possession tied it up again at 56-56 with just over 30 seconds remaining.
It was the theme all night but it came down to the offensive glass for Siena. After a missed shot from the Saints, Symone gathered the teams 19th offensive rebound and was fouled on the put back. She stepped up to the line and drained the two free throws that would put the Saints ahead for good.
Marist had two more chances at tying the game but both shots went waning, with the last shot ricocheting off the rim and into a tie up situation with Siena in possession.
Up next Marist women's basketball will Pack The House as the Red Foxes host Senior Day against Canisius. Tipoff is set for 7 p.m. and tickets are available at the Marist Ticket Office located in the McCann Center or online at MaristTickets.com. The Red Foxes will attempt to sell out their seventh game in program history as it sends off an accomplished senior class on Saturday night at McCann Arena.
