Baseball Loses to High Point 4-2

HIGH POINT, North Carolina -- The Red Foxes dropped the second game of a weekend series at the High Point University Panthers on Saturday by a final score of 4-2. With the loss, Marist stands at 2-3 (0-0 Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference) while High Point is 2-3 (0-0 Big South Conference).

Freshman Tyler Kapuscinski led the Red Foxes with his second multi hit game of the year, going 2-for-4 at the plate. Freshman Frankie Gregoire and senior co-captain Matt Pagano each had one hit and one run scored on the afternoon.

Sophomore Charlie Jerla got the start for Marist, throwing four innings, giving up three runs on eight hits with four walks and two strikeouts. Sophomore Spencer Bunting pitched four innings and gave up one run on five hits with one walk and two strikeouts.

Junior Chris Clare led the Panthers with a 3-for-5 with one run batted in. Three other High Point players had two hits each.

For the second night in a row, High Point got on the board in the bottom of the first inning. Sophomore Hunter Lee led off with a single to right field and stole second during the next at bat. Clare single to right, advancing Lee to third. Two batters later, Clare stole second, setting up men on second and third with one out. Senior Dominic Fazio followed up with a single up the middle, scoring Lee but a great throw by senior co-captain Graham McIntire in center field nailed Clare at home and the Panthers led 1-0.

High Point added onto the lead in the bottom of the third when Fazio doubled to left center followed by a single by sophomore Carson Jackson, setting up men on first and third with no outs. Two batters later, junior Luke Parker singled through the left side scoring Fazio. Junior Nick Capra followed up with a single to left center that scored Jackson and the Panthers were up 3-0.

Marist got on the board in the top of the fourth when Pagano singled up the middle with one out. Gregoire followed up with a double to right field and senior co-captain Joey Aiola made it three hits in a row with a double down the left field line scoring Pagano and Gregoire and the Red Foxes trimmed the deficit to 3-2.

The score remained the same until the bottom of the seventh when High Point added their final run of the afternoon. Lee singled up the middle with two outs, followed by a double down the left field line by Clare that scored Lee and the Panthers led 4-2.

The Red Foxes tried to answer back but were unable to put anything together as they went 1-2-3 in both the eight and ninth innings and High Point walked away with the 4-2 victory.

Up next for Marist is the rubber match of the weekend series at High Point as they return to action on Sunday. First pitch is scheduled for 1 PM.
