JERSEY CITY, New Jersey – The Marist women's basketball team picked up their eighth straight win as they downed the Saint Peter's Peacocks, 74-55, Friday evening at the Yanitelli Center in a Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference match-up. With the win the Red Foxes improve to 12-11 overall and 11-2 in conference play. Saint Peter's falls to 4-18 overall and 2-11 in the MAAC.
Freshman walk-on point guard Claire Oberdorf tallied a new career high with 18 points on 6-for-7 shooting from the field, four rebounds, and three assists.
Tori Jarosz secured her 18th double-double of the season with 19 points and 13 rebounds on 8-for-12 shooting from the field. Sydney Coffey was the Red Foxes third scorer in double digits as she put up 14 points, four rebounds, and three assists.
Red Foxes started 4-for-4 from three point range, two from Oberdorf and two from Coffey, forcing a Saint Peter's timeout less than four minutes into the game. Overall the Red Foxes missed just one shot in the first quarter finishing 11-for-12 and matching the team's most points scored in a quarter. Propelled by 5-for-6 shooting from three the Red Foxes took a 27-15 lead into the second.
Marist cooled off slightly from its torrid stretch offensively in the first but still finished the half shooting just under 60 percent from the field (15-for-26), and 45 percent from three point range (5-for-11). Oberdorf, after setting a new career high in points in just the first quarter with 11, finished the half with 13 points on 4-for-4 shooting to go along with four rebounds and three assists. Jarosz well on her way to another double-double finished the half with 14 points and seven rebounds.
A three from the wing by Oberdorf with 5:36 remaining in the quarter pushed the Red Foxes lead back to 22. After the media timeout Coffey followed up with two strong takes to the hoop and pushed the Red Foxes lead to 27, their largest lead of the game to that point. The Red Foxes would eventually stretch out that lead to 31 points with 50 seconds remaining in the third and cruise to the victory from there.
The Red Foxes return home to take on Manhattan for the second time this season on Monday, February 8th. Tip-off is scheduled for 7 p.m. The Red Foxes took the first meeting against the Jaspers 79-73 back in early January.
