Box Score DOVER, Delaware – The Red Foxes snapped a five game losing streak on Friday with a 4-2 win over the Delaware State Hornets. With the victory, Marist improves to 3-7 (0-0 Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference) while the loss drops the Hornets to 0-13 (0-0 Mid Eastern Athletic Conference).
Junior Greg Kocinski led the Red Foxes with a 2-for-4 effort at the plate with one run batted in. Junior Tyler Kirkpatrick and freshman Frankie Gregoire chipped in going 1-for-4 with one RBI each. Marist totaled seven hits on the afternoon.
Junior Sean Keenan got the start and the win, his second of the season, throwing seven and one third innings, giving up eight hits and two runs to go along with six strikeouts. Sophomore Mike Coss pitched one third of an inning giving up no runs on no hits and junior Ryan Thomas got his second save of the season, pitching one and one third innings, giving up one hit and no runs.
Freshmen Todd Henry and Darnell Maisonet-Velez led Delaware State with 2-for-5 efforts at the plate to go along with one run scored each.
The Hornets got on the board first in the bottom of the first inning. Maisonet-Velez doubled with one out and following a fly out to left field, a hit batter set up men on first and second. Freshman Chris Panzarella hit an RBI single up the middle, scoring Maisonet-Velez and Delaware St. was up 1-0.
Henry doubled to lead off the bottom of the third and advanced to third on wild pitch two batters later. Senior Cameron Onderko singled through the right side that scored Henry and the Hornets extended their lead to 2-0.
The Red Foxes answered back in the top of the fourth. Sophomore Andrew Rouse walked, followed by a single through the right side by junior Zachary Racusin. During the next at bat, Rouse advanced to third and scored on a throwing error by the catcher to trim the deficit to 2-1. Two batters later, Gregoire doubled down the left field line, scoring Racusin to tie the game at 2-2.
Neither team scored for the next several innings, until Marist took the lead in the top of the eighth. After a Delaware State pitching change, senior co-captain Graham McIntire reached on a fielding error by the third baseman. Two batters later, McIntire stole second and advanced to third on a throwing error by the catcher. After a ground out to short stop, Kirkpatrick hit a single to second that scored McIntire and the Red Foxes held the 3-2 lead.
Marist added an insurance run in the top of the ninth when senior co-captain Joey Aiola doubled to left field. Kocinski followed with a double down the right field line that scored Aiola and the Red Foxes had a 4-2 lead.
The Hornets looked to answer in their final at bat of the afternoon but were only able to manage one single as Marist emerged with the 4-2 win.
