Box Score NEWARK, New Jersey — The Red Foxes ended a three game losing streak with a 4-2 win over the New Jersey Institute of Technology Highlanders on Wednesday. The win brings Marist to 6-10 (0-0 Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference while the loss drops the Highlanders to 7-11 (0-0 Atlantic Sun Conference).
Sophomore Andrew Rouse led the Red Foxes going 3-for-5 with two runs scored while freshman Frankie Gregoire chipped in with a 2-for-4 effort with a home run and one run batted in. Marist totaled eight hits on the afternoon.
Sophomore Michael Hunter got the win in his first start of the season throwing five innings while giving up no runs on one hit with a walk and two strike outs. Sophomore Thomas Henderson made his fourth appearance of the year, pitched one third of an inning and gave up no runs on no hits to go along with two walks. Freshman Kevin Stewart threw two and two thirds innings while giving up no runs on no hits with one walk and two strikeouts and junior Ryan Thomas got the save, his fourth of the year, pitching one inning with one run on one hit and four walks.
Sophomores Evan Pietronico and Matt Stalter led NJIT with one hit and one hit and one run batted in respectively. The Highlanders finished the game with two hits total.
For the fourth consecutive game, the Red Foxes got on the board in the top of the first inning. Sophomore Andrew Rouse led off with a single and advanced to second and third on a wild pitch. Two batters later, a ground out by junior Tyler Kirkpatrick scored Rouse and Marist was ahead 1-0.
The Red Foxes added to their lead in the top of the second when freshman Frankie Gregoire jacked his first career homer, a solo shot to right field to give Marist the 2-0 lead.
The Highlanders trimmed the deficit in the bottom of the sixth. Henderson came on to replace Hunter at pitcher and sophomore Jesse Uttendorfer and junior Bryan Haberstroh walked with one out. The Red Foxes made another pitching change bringing on Stewart and Pietronico walked to load the bases. Senior Stefan Halibej grounded into a fielder's choice that scored Uttendorfer and the score was 2-1.
Marist added two more runs in the top of the eighth when senior co-captain Joey Aiola pinch hit and reached on an error by the second baseman. Rouse followed with a single before he and Aiola stole second and third during the next at bat. Senior co-captain Graham McIntire grounded out to second, scoring Aiola before Kirkpatrick singled up the middle, scoring Rouse and the Red Foxes were ahead 4-1.
NJIT entered the bottom of the ninth, down by three runs and looking for the comeback against Thomas on the mound. Pietronico walked to lead off before Halibej grounded into a 4-6-3 double play. Junior Cody Kramer and freshmen Tom Brady and Michael Anastasia walked to load the bases before Stalter singled, scoring Kramer and the Highlanders trailed 4-2. With the trying run on second, Thomas got freshman Justin Etts to ground out to first base to end the game with the Red Foxes emerging victorious 4-2.
Up next for Marist is their MAAC and home opener vs Quinnipiac on Thursday at McCann Field. First pitch is scheduled for 3 PM.
