ALBANY, New York – The third-seeded Marist women's basketball team defeated sixth-seeded Manhattan, 70-58, in the quarterfinal round of the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference Basketball Championship on Saturday at the Times Union Center.
Sixth-year senior center Tori Jarosz led all scorers with 22 points. Jarosz also had team highs of nine rebounds, three assists and three blocks. She shot 8-for-15 from the field and 6-for-8 from the free-throw line. Senior guard/forward Sydney Coffey added 21 points. She shot 4-for-6 from the field and went 12-for-13 from the free-throw line.
Amani Tatum led Manhattan with 12 points, and also contributed seven rebounds, a team-high five assists and two steals. Kayla Grimme had 10 points and a game-high 11 rebounds.
Marist never trailed in the contest. Coffey opened the scoring with a three-pointer 53 seconds into the game, and the Red Foxes scored the first 11 points as they held the Jaspers scoreless for the first 3:38. Marist led by as much as 10 in the first quarter, and held a 19-11 advantage after the first 10 minutes.
In the second quarter, the Red Foxes never led by less than eight, and grew their lead to 13 on two occasions. A three-pointer by senior guard Eileen Van Horn with 1:28 left in the first half put Marist ahead, 39-26, and that was the lead the Red Foxes took to the locker room. Coffey led Marist with 12 first-half points, while Jarosz had 10.
Marist's lead continued to swell in the third quarter. In a span of 1:05, Jarosz scored six consecutive points to put the Red Foxes up 49-30 with 5:31 remaining. With 2:10 left in the period, two free throws by Coffey gave Marist its largest lead of the game at 55-33. The Jaspers scored the final six points of the quarter, but the Red Foxes were still up 55-39 after three.
Manhattan chipped away at its deficit in the fourth quarter. With 3:10 left, a three-pointer by Jacqui Thompson brought Manhattan to within 10 at 63-53. Ultimately, the 10-point margin turned out to be Marist's smallest lead of the second half. The Red Foxes shot 6-for-8 from the line in the final two minutes to preserve the victory.
For the game, Marist .476 from the field (20-for-42), .455 from three-point range (5-for-11) and .806 from the free-throw line (25-for-31). The Red Foxes limited the Jaspers to marks of .310 from the field (22-for-71), .217 from three-point range (5-for-23) and .600 from the free-throw line (9-for-15). A total of 18 offensive rebounds propelled the Jaspers to a 38-34 edge on the boards. Manhattan committed 14 turnovers, while Marist had 19.
Marist is now 16-15 overall. Manhattan's season ends at 15-16.
