LATHAM, New York – The Marist women's tennis team picked up their third straight Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference win of the season in a tight match against Siena, defeating the Saints 4-3 Friday afternoon. With the win the Red Foxes move to 4-10 overall on the season and remain perfect in conference play, improving to 3-0.
The match came down the wire as a tough doubles point proved to eventually be the main decider in the match. After dropping the first doubles match from the second singles position, Lisa Ventimiglia and Melissa Carlay rallied from a 5-2 deficit in the third doubles position to claim a comeback win and defeat Siena's Rina Sakai and Julia Dunbar, 7-6 (7-2).
The Red Foxes then went on to win the crucial doubles point from the first singles position after Chloe Lant's serve wide to the deuce side secured the match for her and Karlene Pang, defeating the Saint's Ali Garrity and Mitsuki Fukamachi, 6-4.
Lant was also the deciding factor in singles play as the freshman phenom clinched the match for the Red Foxes from the third singles position, defeating Fukamachi in straight sets, 6-3, 6-4.
Elizabeth Brozovich picked up the Red Foxes first singles point of the day, defeating Siena's Julia Dunbar, 6-1, 6-1 and Caroline Lozo won from the second singles position, 6-0, 6-2 for the Red Foxes second singles point.
The Red Foxes return to action on Sunday with more conference play, this time against the Monmouth Hawks. Due to the impending inclement weather, Sunday's match has been moved indoors to the Matchpoint Tennis facilities in Goshen, NY. Match time is set for 4:45 p.m.
