Box Score 2 NEW ROCHELLE, New York – The Red Foxes snapped their five game overall and three game Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference win streak with a 3-2 (Game 1) and 2-1 (Game 2) loss to the Iona College Gaels. Marist now stands at 10-12 (3-2 MAAC) while Iona improves to 7-16 (2-0 MAAC).
Tyler Kirkpatrick and Matt Iantosca led the Red Foxes on the afternoon going 3-for-8 with one run scored and 3-for-7 respectively. In Game 1, Zachary Racusin extended his hit streak to six games going 4-for-4 while co-captain Joey Aiola went 2-for-5 with one RBI, co-captain Graham McIntire went 2-for-4 and Andrew Rouse and Frankie Gregoire each contributed a hit. In Game 2, Rouse went 1-for-3 while Greg Kocinski went 0-for-1 with an RBI.
Sean Breen led Iona in the two games, going a combined 4-for-8 with one run scored and one RBI.
Sean Keenan got the start in Game 1 and threw seven innings, giving up two runs on seven hits to go along with three walks and six strikeouts. Mike Coss pitched two and one third innings and gave up one run on three hits and two strikeouts and Ryan Thomas pitched one third of an inning and gave up one hit.
Charlie Jerla started Game 2 and got the loss (2-4), throwing six innings, while giving up two runs on three hits along with one walk and four strikeouts.
Game 1:
The Red Foxes got on the board first in the bottom of the second inning. Kirkpatrick singled through the right side and Gregoire followed with a single down the right field line, setting up men on first and third. Aiola singled through the right side, scoring Kirkpatrick and Racusin followed with a single to the pitcher to load the bases. Anthony Lazar reached on a fielder's choice to the shortstop that allowed Gregoire to score and Marist was ahead 2-0.
Iona answered in the bottom of the third when Fran Kinsey singled to center. Two batters later, Breen doubled to right center that scored Kinsey and Travis Mistretta followed with a walk. After a strike out, Carmine Palummo singled through the left side, scoring Breen and the game was tied 2-2.
After six consecutive scoreless innings, the Gaels finally ended the game in extra innings in the 10th when Matt Byrne singled to right with one out. Breen followed with a single through the left side and Thomas came on to pitch for Coss for the Red Foxes. Kyle DiVico pinch hit for Iona and laced a single through the right side that scored Byrne and Iona walked off with the 3-2 win.
Game 2:
Marist opened the scoring in the second game in the top of the first. Rouse singled to right to lead things off and two batters later, stole second and advanced to third on a wild pitch. Kocinski hit a sac fly to right field that scored Rouse and the Red Foxes lead 1-0.
In the bottom of the second, the Gaels answered back when Mistretta walked and Lou Matarazzo tripled to right center, scoring Mistretta. Palummo followed with a sac fly to left field that scored Matarazzo and Iona was ahead 2-1.
The remainder of the game proved to be dominated by pitching and the Red Foxes entered their last at bat in the top of the seventh down by one run. However, a comeback was not in the cards as Marist went down 1-2-3 and the Gaels emerged with the 2-1 victory.
Up next, the Red Foxes will wrap up the three game series with a matchup at Iona on Sunday at 3:30 PM.
