POUGHKEEPSIE, New York – The Marist women's soccer team scored the only goal in the second half but a 2-0 halftime deficit was too much to overcome as the Monmouth Hawks won 2-0 Saturday evening in Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC) action at Tenney Stadium.
With the loss the Red Foxes drop to 3-5 overall and 0-1 in conference play while Monmouth improves to 3-3-1 overall and 1-0 in MAAC play.
Monmouth jumped out to a quick 1-0 lead when a foul in the box nine minutes into the contest gave the Hawks a chance to capitalize. Julie Spracklin calmly stepped up for the corner kick and knocked the ball into the left corner of net to put Marist in the hole.
Just five minutes later a sprint down the right side of the field by Rachael Ivanicki left her clear on goal. Ivanicki kicked it past the Marist keeper, giving the Hawks a two goal lead.
A rocket shot from outside the box in the 35th minute by Marist's Kristen Reilly nearly cut the Red Foxes deficit to just one but the ball rang off the crossbar and back into play.
At the half Monmouth held the 7-6 advantage in shots while Marist held a 2-1 advantage in corners. Makala Foley had three saves for the Red Foxes in the half.
The Hawks came out at halftime pressing for a three goal lead but three consecutive huge saves from Foley kept the Monmouth lead to two.
Marist settled into the half and began applying some pressure of their own, finally cracking the Hawks back line in the 63rd minute. A cross from the corner by Juliette Loccisano found the foot of freshman Alexa Svensson who blasted a shot into the upper portion of the net.
The Marist goal would be the Red Foxes last real flurry as Monmouth held onto possession throughout and ended the half with a 9-3 advantage in shots.
Foley finished the game with eight saves, half of which were of the brilliant variety. Monmouth's keeper Sydney Lavan finished the game with four saves.
Marist's Brianna Robinson, Loccisano, and Svensson each had two shots in the game, leading Marist. Monmouth's Alli Deluca led the Hawks with four shots and Alexis McTamney had three shots.
Up next the Red Foxes head out on the road for their final non-conference game of the season against Delaware State on Wednesday, September 21st. Kick-off is scheduled for 7 p.m.
