POUGHKEEPSIE, New York – The Marist men's soccer team suffered its' first defeat of 2016, in heartbreaking fashion to the University of Vermont Catamounts by a final score of 2-1 on Saturday night. After Connor Flatley tied the game 1-1 in the 67th minute and the Red Foxes had several chances to take the lead, the Catamounts converted a penalty kick with just over five minutes left in the game to take the 2-1 victory.

"The effort was there" said head coach Matt Viggiano. "That is soccer sometimes you don't get the result that maybe you deserve. That's a good team, they're 7-1 for a reason. They made the most of their couple opportunites. We didn't, especially in the first half and unfortunately we're on the wrong side of the result. If my guys don't realize they can play with anybody, I mean that team was on its' heels for the majority of the 90 minutes. I'm proud of the way we played but it's a result oriented business and we gotta get a W."

Flatley led Marist with one goal, while Samad Bounthong finished the evening with one assist. The Red Foxes outshot Vermont 16-10 (5-2 shots on goal), while the Catamounts held a 7-6 advantage in corner kicks.

Vermont struck first in the 22nd minute when John Arnar Barodal collected a pass on the top left corner of the box and fed a through ball past the Marist defensive line to a streaking Jackson Dayton who knocked it into the bottom right corner for the 1-0 lead.

Despite generating eight shots in the opening period, the Red Foxes managed just one shot on goal and at the end of the first half it was 1-0 in favor of the visitors.

Invigorated by a large crowd, including a large group of alumni back for the game, Marist came out of the second half fired up and looking for the tie.

Finally, in the 67th minute, a corner kick from the left side by Bounthong found Flatley open at the back post who knocked it home for the 1-1 tie.

The Red Foxes were not done and had several chances following to take the lead, including a wide open Cameron Harr in the box but his header attempt just missed the cross and went wide for a goal kick.

With just over five minutes left in the game, Vermont found space down the left side and played the ball into the box to an open player who was fouled for a penalty kick. Loftur Eriksson took the penalty and found the top left corner for the 2-1 lead.

An urgent scramble by Marist in the final minutes generated some near miss chances but the Red Foxes were unable to find the tying goal and the final horn sounded with the Catamounts emerging victorious 2-1.

Up next, Marist remains home and takes on Stony Brook in its' second to last non-conference game of 2016 on Wednesday, Sept. 21st at Tenney Stadium. Kick-off is scheduled for 7 PM.
