ITHACA, New York - The Marist volleyball team (0-5) started off sets strong, but trailed off in the later halves in a 3-0 loss to Colgate (2-2) on Sept. 3 at the Cornell Invitational. Set scores were 25-15, 25-21 and 25-20. 

Freshman Nikki DeSerpa tied a team best by slamming eight kills along with five digs and a pair of service aces. With 20 assists and nine digs, sophomore Taylor van der Biezen fell just short of a double-double after seeing most of the action at setter. On the defensive end, senior Lexi Millington racked up a match-high 19 digs. 

After cutting the deficit to one and two points in the first set, Colgate took over with kills in front and got three of their eight service aces on the afternoon to snatch the early 1-0 lead.

Marist took its first lead of the match at 2-1 in the second set and fought to tie the match at 7 with the help of kills from four different players. That point marked the sixth draw of the stanza. Colgate ripped off an 8-2 run that powered it to a 2-0 edge in the contest.

Kills were even in the final set, and consecutive service aces by DeSerpa by the midway point in the frame tied the score at 16. The Raiders took a timeout and scored nine of the match's final 13 points to walk off the court with a victory. 

Colgate junior Molly Smith registered 31 assists and seven digs, while sophomore Amanda Smith had a match-high 10 kills.
