NEW ROCHELLE, New York – The Marist women's basketball team picked up a Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference road win over the Iona Gaels, 68-62, Sunday afternoon. With the win the Red Foxes improve to 8-10 overall and 5-3 in MAAC play. Iona moves to 9-8 overall and 4-4 in conference.
Maura Fitzpatrick led the way with 18 points, seven rebounds, and four assists and was one-of-four Red Foxes in double-figures. Hannah Hand added 14 points, nine rebounds, and three assists while Claire Oberdorf scored 13 points on 5-for-11 shooting from the field.
After the first quarter the Red Foxes trailed by just one. Fitzpatrick poured in eight points in the first on 2-for-4 shooting from the field. Â After trading baskets to start the new quarter, the Red Foxes rattled off a 6-0 run behind points from Hannah Hand, Oberdorf and Lovisa Henningsdottir to take a 25-20 lead and force an Iona timeout.
The Red Foxes weren't cooled by Iona's timeout, building on their 6-0 run with six more from Fitzpatrick, Henningsdottir and Oberdorf to take a 31-20 lead.
Overall the Red Foxes held Iona scoreless for nearly seven minutes during their 12-0 run and jumped ahead of the Gaels, 35-27, by halftime.
A 7-2 run by Iona to start the new half pulled Iona back to within three. After trading some baskets, Iona reeled off another 7-0 run, holding the Red Foxes scoreless for over three minutes to tie the game at 43-43.
The Red Foxes headed to the fourth leading, 49-48, after a buzzer beating three by Iona's Marina Lizarazu pulled the Gaels to within one.
After trading triples both teams went on a scoreless drought for over two minutes in the middle of the fourth. A great back door cut and layup by Rebekah Hand put the Red Foxes up 61-56 with two minutes to go. Free throws from Hannah extended the lead to seven with just a minute remaining and the Red Foxes would hold on from there.
The Red Foxes will get a few days break before returning home for three straight games starting against Siena on Friday, January 20th. Tip-off is scheduled for 7 p.m.
