WEST LONG BRANCH, New Jersey – The Marist women's basketball team fell to the Monmouth Hawks, 79-69, Monday afternoon in Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference action. With the loss the Red Foxes move to 5-9 overall and 2-2 in conference play. The Hawks pick up their first conference win, improving to 6-6 overall and 1-2 in MAAC play.
Claire Oberdorf led the way in scoring for Marist with 18 points, 7 rebounds, and 4 assists. Â Oberdorf's 18 points tied her career high set against Saint Peter's last season. Rebekah Hand was the Red Foxes second player in double-digits with 14 points, seven rebounds, and two assists, but fouled out with around seven minutes remaining in the game.
After shooting 7-for-15 in the first quarter and holding a four point lead after one, the Red Foxes went cold, shooting 4-for-14 in the second quarter including 1-for-6 from three. Along with the drought by Marist, Monmouth rattled off 25 points in the second half while going 5-for-6 from deep.
With just over two minutes to go in the first half, free throws from Kendall Baab broke a near four minute scoring drought for Marist. Then back-to-back break out layups from Baab, the second one resulting in a foul and an additional free throw, pulled the Red Foxes to within one with less than two minutes to go in the half.
Monmouth then rattled off an 8-0 run to head into the break leading by nine, 40-31. Baab and Henningsdottir led Marist in scoring after the first half, both with seven points. Oberdorf added six and Rebekah Hand scored five but was forced to spend the final four minutes of the half on the bench after picking up three fouls.
The Red Foxes came out hot after the break outscoring Monmouth 11-3 including a 7-0 spurt before the first media timeout hit. The run pulled Marist to within one, 43-42, with over six minutes to go in the third quarter.
A three pointer from straight away by Maura Fitzpatrick gave the Red Foxes their first lead since early in the second quarter and capped off a 6-for-6 to start including 2-for-2 from three burst by Marist.
For the next three minutes Monmouth responded with a 10-0 run to take the lead back at 55-49 and then another 8-0 run to head to the fourth leading 63-51.
The Hawks held onto their lead throughout the fourth as Marist was never able to cut it down to single digits.
Marist will continue on its stretch of three consecutive road games on Thursday, January 5, when the Red Foxes travel to conference opponent Canisius. Tip-off is scheduled for 11 a.m.
