POUGHKEEPSIE, New York - The Marist women's basketball team fell in a Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference home game, 48-37, against the Iona Gales Thursday night. With the loss, the Red Foxes fall to 8-12 overall and 5-5 in conference play. Iona moves to 12-8 overall and 7-4 in conference play.

Freshman Hannah Hand led the Red Foxes with 12 points, eight rebounds, went 5-11 from the field and was one of three others with five or more rebounds. Kendall Baab had six points, two rebounds, one assist and went 2-2 from the free throw line. Lovisa Henningsdottir had seven points, six rebounds, and went 2-9 from the field.

After the first quarter the Red Foxes led by eight after equal contributions by the entire Marist lineup. Hannah Hand led the team in first quarter scoring with seven of the team's points. Other scores were aided by Claire Oberdorf, Maura Fitzpatrick, Kendall Baab and Henningsdottir shooting a combined 4 for 10 from the field.

A three by Iona started off the second quarter shrinking the Marist lead to five. After a back and forth of missed shots and fouls, Hannah Hand continued her hot play by draining the first points of the quarter for the Red Foxes extending the Marist lead to seven. Three pointers by Iona kept the Marist lead tight to just four. After both teams went scoreless for over three minutes, two made free throws by Iona squeezed the Marist lead to just two. A missed shot by Oberdorf with three seconds left closed the half with Marist ahead 22-20.

To start the third, Iona rattled off a 7-0 run to take a 27-22 lead with 7:41 remaining. Two made free throws by Henningsdottir gave the Red Foxes their first points of the quarter with 5:48 remaining and a layup by Oberdorf reduced the Iona lead to two with 2:29 remaining. To close out the third, a two by Iona with five seconds remaining closed out the third with the Gaels in the lead, 34-30.

A layup by Iona started the scoring for Iona in the fourth with 8:50 remaining in the half. Iona then went on another 7-0 run increasing the Gaels lead to 10 with 7:55 remaining.

Multiple missed shots later, Iona drained a three that increased their lead to 13. Marist would be unable to cut the deficit to single digits as Iona held on for the road victory.

The Red Foxes will continue on at home in two days when they compete in another Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference showdown against Canisius on Saturday January 28th. Tip-off is scheduled for 7:00 p.m.
